Curacao police have new leads in $11.5M gold heist

The "Summer Bliss" fishing boat sits docked at the Willemstad port in Curacao, Friday, Nov. 30, 2012. Masked men in jackets emblazoned with the word "police" boarded the "Summer Bliss" in an early morning assault on Friday and stole 70 gold bars worth an estimated $11.5 million, police spokesman Reggie Huggins said. He declined to say who owned the approximately 216 kilograms (476 pounds) of gold but he said it was a legal shipment that was being transshipped through Curacao and officials in the island had been advised in advance that it was coming as part of normal security protocols. (AP) ? Police in Curacao said Saturday that they have several leads following a brazen heist in which gunmen pretending to be police stole 70 gold bars worth an estimated $11.5 million from a fishing boat.

Authorities have the license plate number of one of three cars used in Friday's getaway, and they have been asking for the public's help in tracking the suspects, police spokesman Reggie Huggins told The Associated Press.

"There is information coming in," he said. "We are getting reactions from the public, but we still have to sort it out."

Police have said that at least six men were involved, but no one has been arrested in a case that surprised authorities in the Dutch Caribbean island.

Huggins said police are still interviewing the captain and three crew members of the ship, which contacted officials in Curacao about the incoming gold shipment as part of regular security protocol. The gold bars weigh about 216 kilograms (476 pounds).

Police declined to say where the gold was being delivered, but one crew member, who identified himself to the AP as Raymond Emmanuel, said they were delivering the gold to an unidentified company in Curacao.

He said the crew left Guyana on Monday and arrived in Curacao early Friday. Shortly after the ship docked, masked gunmen wearing jackets with the word "police" assaulted the boat's captain and then stole the gold bars.

Huggins said that security guards allowed the suspects to enter a restricted area thinking they were customs officials.

Rechenel Martyn, spokesman for Curacao Customs, said the boat's captain shared with authorities the intended recipient of the gold bars, but he declined to release the name because the case is under investigation. He added that the ship's crew followed protocol and that there is no special procedure for shipments of high value.

Meanwhile, officials in Guyana said they are investigating whether the gold was mined in the South American country, which is near Curacao.

Environment Minister Robert Persaud told the AP that they have requested details about the gold bars, adding that such shipments are usually flown directly to the buyer and involve heavy security. The ship's crew members have said they weren't armed.

Both Persaud and Anan Balram, director of Guyana's Gold Board, said that if the gold was mined in Guyana, it would be a clear case of smuggling.

"We don't want to jump the gun and say that the gold is from Guyana," Persaud said. "That is what we first have to establish, as well as if the ship many any other stops anywhere else."

Officials said there is no record of the ship, named "Summer Bliss," leaving Guyana's Port Georgetown Harbor, adding that it could have left from a pier at any of the country's numerous rivers.

Guyana produces roughly 650,000 ounces of gold a year, and officials say that up to half that amount is smuggled out of the country to avoid paying taxes. Most of the gold is sold in neighboring Brazil, Venezuela and Suriname.

iFixit pries open new 215inch iMac, finds twin mics and a glued on display

We got an early teardown of the latest 21,5-inch iMac thanks Japanese site Kodawarisan, but now it's had the full iFixit treatment. The overall verdict? Well iFixit weren't overly enthused with some of the new design's internal fixings, making a special reference to the use of glue to bind the LCD and glass to the rest of the frame, instead of magnets as found in previous models. Likewise, those two major components are now fused together meaning if you want to replace one, you'll be replacing the other, too. This adhesive also contributes to the trickiness of general repair. Beyond the glue-based concerns, there's the usual intense poring over of internal like the dual mics found at the rear, or the 2.5-inch HGST / Western Digital hard drive. Overall, though, the tone is a definite thumbs down when it comes to repairability, with the device getting just 3 out of 10 on it's now famous meter. Scraping popcorn ceilings is painful and messy. The Texture Terminator solves both problems. It has a replaceable metal blade to make scraping easier (the manufacturer recommends spraying the texture with water first) and a built-in container to catch the falling debris. The adjustable-length handle can accommodate various ceiling heights. The manufacturer says the $190 tool can scrap a 240 sq. ft. room ceiling in about 40 minutes.

The Texture Terminator is a new tool that's just getting into stores. But you can see a demo video on the company's website.

According to unnamed sources speaking to Bloomberg, Microsoft is set to launch its successor to the Xbox 360 in time for the holidays next year. The report states Microsoft is still undecided about whether or not the company will unveil the console at E3 or a separate, dedicated event.

Microsoft has declined to comment on the report.

Previous rumors suggested the codename of the console is "Durango" and will likely ship with the next-generation Kinect camera. Other rumors say the console may tie your game purchases to your Xbox Live account, effectively locking out used games.

Struggling Boston church may cash in on rare 1640 book

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (Reuters) - A Massachusetts church may sell a copy of the first book published in the American colonies - a volume sometimes called the Gutenberg Bible of America - to help sustain its 343-year-old ministry.

The Old South Church in Boston plans to vote at a meeting on Sunday whether to sell one of its two copies of the book of psalms printed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1640 and expected to sell at auction for $10 million to $20 million, Senior Minister Nancy Taylor said on Friday.

The church, a nonprofit organization dating back to 1669, was considering the sale because it needed money to maintain its building, a National Historic Landmark built in 1875, and support its work with the public and the poor, she said.

"It's a sign of the times," Taylor said. "We are a true sanctuary in the city. We think this is an important ministry that we want to keep going."

The book of psalms, she said, was "a very, very special rare book" kept in a special collection at the Boston Public Library. It is the lesser of two copies owned by the church, she said.

It was among 1,600 copies used as common hymn books in the 17th century, of which only 11 are known to still exist, she said. Other copies of the book are owned by Harvard, Yale and Brown universities, among other institutions, Taylor said.

The book's importance went beyond its status as the first book printed in North America, said David Redden, vice chairman and director of the special projects department at Sotheby's.

"It was really the first evidence of scholarship and civilization from the West reaching North America, so from that standpoint it's extremely symbolic," Redden said. "It's easy to call it the Gutenberg Bible of America."

Taylor, the senior minister, said the church's leadership supported the idea of selling the book. But some members of the church have spoken out against the plan, saying the church had been through tougher times before, according to local media reports.

The Old South Church in Boston also will consider selling 19 pieces of silver housed since 1939 at the city's Museum of Fine Arts, Taylor said.

About 200 to 300 of the church's 600 members were expected to attend Sunday's meeting.

Craft a Holiday Wishlist with Ribbons and Mini ... - OC Family Blogs

Make Your Holiday Wishlist as a Family

I recently posted a quick and easy jewelry organizer craft using mini clothespins and a picture frame and used them to display my handmade necklaces for sale at the recent?Mission Viejo Holiday Gifts & Goodies Boutique. The necklaces were a hit, and so were the organizers. One customer actually asked how much was I selling them for. Another customer told me how she had recently used mini clothespins on a ribbon to make a hanging Christmas wishlist for her daughter. I knew I had to try and make one of my own for the whole family. And here is what I did:

First I gathered a variety of craft supplies. The main supplies needed are really thick ribbon, dowel rods, glue gun, yarn or thin ribbon for hanging, and mini clothespins. The additional supplies are all for decoration and personalization, like jingle bells, various holiday picks, initial letters, etc.

Then the rest is assembly. First you will need to attach ribbon on your dowel rod. You can do a separate one for each person in your family, or you can do like me and hang a ribbon per family member on one dowel rod. I cut three lengths of wide ribbon at 48? each in different colors and I used a glue gun to fold over and attach them to the dowel. You could also use a sewing machine and do a quick stitch at the top.

So as to allow the ribbons to hang straight, I attached a second dowel rod at the bottom of the ribbons. This was the trickiest part. I wanted to make sure the ribbons hung at the same length. I used large clothespins to hold the ribbon on the dowel rods and laid it on a long kitchen bench until I was ready to decorate and personalize.

After you have that accomplished, it is time to personalize your family wishlist and add the clothespins. I added some holiday decorative picks on either side and glued to secure. I tied a pretty white fluffy yarn at the top to make the hanger, and added a string of fun colored jingle bells. And I glued on an initial letter for each person in my family to personalize each ribbon wishlist.

I then attached mini clothespins all down the whole length of the ribbon about 6? apart from each other, and finished off with decorating the bottom dowel rod. I added another string of jingle bells at the bottom to add weight and allow the ribbon wishlists to hang nicely. I hung from our living room closet door, and the wishing began!

My tween couldn?t wait to start adding things to her list. She cut pictures out of magazines or catalogs, and wrote wishlist items on small pieces of paper. I remember as a kid scouring over the ginormous Sears catalog and picking out my Christmas list. This ribbon wishlist craft is a fun way to make your wish visible, interactive, and a fun family activity.

I?m hoping all of your holiday wishes come true this year. Thanks for reading, and happy crafting!
