Brain damage triggered by mini-strokes detailed

Dec. 12, 2012 ? A new study appearing December 12 in the Journal of Neuroscience details for the first time how "mini-strokes" cause prolonged periods of brain damage and result in cognitive impairment. These strokes, which are often imperceptible, are common in older adults and are believed to contribute to dementia.

"Our research indicates that neurons are being lost as a result of delayed processes following a mini-strokes that may differ fundamentally from those of acute ischemic events," said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., the lead author of the study and professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). "This observation suggests that the therapeutic window to protect cells after these tiny strokes may extend to days and weeks after the initial injury."

The prevalence of mini-strokes, or microinfarcts, has only been recently appreciated because common imaging techniques, such as MRI, are typically not sensitive enough to detect these microscopic injuries.

Similar to severe ischemic strokes, mini-strokes are caused when blood flow is blocked to a small area of the brain, usually by particle that travelled there from another part of the body. But unlike acute ischemic strokes -- which bring about immediate symptoms such as numbness, blurry vision, and slurred speech -- mini-strokes usually pass without notice. However, it is increasingly appreciated that these smaller strokes have a lasting impact on neurological function.

Microinfarcts are far more common than previously understood; it is believed that about 50 percent of individuals over the age of 60 have experienced at least one mini-stroke. Studies have also correlated the presence of mini-strokes with the symptoms of dementia. An estimated 55 percent of individuals with mild dementia and upwards of 70 percent of individuals with more severe symptoms show evidence of past mini-strokes. This association has led researchers to believe that these mini-strokes may be key contributors to age-related cognitive decline and dementia.

Nedergaard and her colleagues were the first to develop an animal model in which the complex progression and, ultimately, the cognitive impact of mini-strokes could be observed. Her team found that, in most instances, these strokes result in a prolonged period of damage to the brain.

A small fraction of these microinfarcts unfold in a manner similar to acute strokes; cell death is immediate and the brain quickly seals off the site of the stroke and begins to "digest" the damaged tissue. However, the researchers also identified a second and far more common form of mini-stroke -- which they labeled incomplete lesions -- where the cell death can drag on for several weeks.

"In most microinfarcts the injury is incomplete," said Nedergaard. "There is no scar tissue to separate the stroke site from the rest of the brain and the cells that would normally support the neurons may not function properly. As a result, the neurons at the site continue to slowly die like a smoldering fire. This suggests that, unlike acute ischemic strokes where the cell death occurs in the first 24 hours, there is a longer period in which we can medically intervene and stop the neuronal death that results from mini-strokes."

The researchers then attempted to determine the cognitive impact of microinfarcts. Mice who were victims of mini-strokes underwent a series of experiments during which they had to recall objects or respond to certain audio cues. The researchers observed that the mice with mini-strokes were far more likely to fail these tasks -- suggesting neurological impairment -- compared to healthy mice.

Additional co-authors include Jeffrey Iliff, Yonghong Liao, Michael Chen, Matthew Shinseki, Arun Venkataraman, and Jessica Cheung with the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at URMC and Minghuan Wang, Wei Wang with the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China. The study was supported with funding from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Charitable Foundation.

Fly Or Die: Kindle Fire HD 8.9 Vs. Nook HD+

Screen Shot 2012-12-12 at 2.14.56 PMShort of an iPad, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and Nook HD+ are about as good as it gets in the 10-inch media tablet space, so we thought it only fitting to Fly or Die these bad boys side-by-side. Though John and I did disagree a bit on which is best, we can both agree that either of these media tablets is an excellent buy for the avid reader and movie lover. Both have excellent displays — the Nook HD+ technically has a slightly higher ppi and laminated screen, while the Fire HD offers stereo speakers. In almost every way, though, it comes down to software.

Photonics: Graphene's flexible future

Dec. 10, 2012 ? Theoretical calculations show graphene's potential for controlling nanoscale light propagation on a chip.

Semiconductors have revolutionized computing because of their efficient control over the flow of electrical currents on a single chip, which has led to devices such as the transistor. Working towards a similar tunable functionality for light, researchers from the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), Singapore, have shown how graphene could be used to control light at the nanometer scale, advancing the concept of photonic circuits on chips1.

Graphene, which is made from a single layer of carbon atoms, has excellent electronic properties; some of these are also useful in photonic applications. Usually, only metals are able to confine light to the order of a few nanometers, which is much smaller than the wavelength of the light. At the surface of metals, collective oscillations of electrons, so-called 'surface plasmons', act as powerful antennae that confine light to very small spaces. Graphene, with its high electrical conductivity, shows similar behavior to metals so can also be used for plasmon-based applications, explains Choon How Gan of IHPC, who led the research.

Gan and co-workers studied theoretically and computationally how surface plasmons travel along sheets of graphene. Even though graphene is a poorer conductor than a metal, so plasmon propagation losses are higher, it has several key advantages, says team member Hong Son Chu. "The key advantage that makes graphene an excellent platform for plasmonic devices is its large tunability that cannot be seen in the usual noble metals," he explains. "This tunability can be achieved in different ways, using electric or magnetic fields, optical triggers and temperature."

The team's calculations indicated that surface plasmons propagating along a sheet of graphene would be much more confined to a small space than they would traveling along a gold surface (see image). However, the team also showed that surface plasmons would travel far better between two sheets of graphene brought into close contact. Furthermore, by adjusting design parameters such as the separation between the sheets, as well as their electrical conductivity, much better control over surface plasmon properties is possible.

In the future, Gan and his co-workers plan to investigate these properties for applications. "We will explore the potential of graphene plasmonic devices also for the terahertz and mid-infrared regime," he explains. "In this spectral range, graphene plasmonic structures could be promising for applications such as molecular sensing, as photodetectors, or for optical devices that can switch and modulate light."

The A*STAR-affiliated researchers contributing to this research are from the Institute of High Performance Computing

Women wearing yoga pants=female equivalent of men wearing ...

muscle shirts?

They're both worn for exercise purposes , and they are both worn out of the gym to show off sexually attractive parts )to the opposite sex) of the body.

Do chicks wear them to the gym for the same purposes, or for exercise (generally speaking, though personal input is appreciated as well.)?

Like it's funny this young Muslim lady was all decked out in a long scarf and loose tee, but the first thing i noticed was her big fat...well, you can use your imagination lol.

Idk is this would be in the adult section, but it's just a culture thing, not too explicit.

btw do they sell yoga pants for men too? so as not to sound sexist, which I completely don't mean to.

Dick Armey pushes GOP to vote on ?fiscal cliff?, hits tea party

Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, who recently resigned as head of tea party group FreedomWorks, suggested House Speaker John Boehner should put the Republican plan to avoid a "fiscal cliff" to a vote already.

"Take the vote," Armey said Monday in an interview with CBS "This Morning." "If the president has his overwhelming mandate from the American people, the 435 members of Congress will recognize that mandate in their districts, and he'll win the vote. If he wins the vote, then he owns the results, and he can take them to the Senate, which is controlled by his party, sign it into law and live with the consequences."

Boehner is the lead Republican on talks between Republicans and the White House on negotiating a deal to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts set to go into effect Jan. 1. Armey defended Boehner's position Monday saying he has the "toughest job" in town.

"He's got a seriously divided majority in the House, he's got a dysfunctional Senate [and] it's questionable whether they can do anything over there," Armey continued, "and they've got a president who says basically, You give me what I want. Once you agree to that, I'll talk to you."

Armey recently cut ties with tea party group FreedomWorks citing displeasure with tea party losses.?On Monday he took the opportunity to bash some of the party's candidates, saying, "We had a lot of candidates quite frankly that did dumb things out there."

But Armey blamed the Republican party, not the movement, for failing to "school" these candidates on avoiding controversial subjects.

Mexican authorities confirmed that the plane in which Rivera was traveling disappeared early Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, after leaving the Mexican northern city of Monterrey where she performed in concert on Saturday night. (AP Photo/Reed Saxon, file)

(AP) ? The wreckage of a small plane believed to be carrying Mexican-American music superstar Jenni Rivera was found in northern Mexico on Sunday and there were no survivors, authorities said.

Transportation and Communications Minister Gerardo Ruiz Esparza said "everything points toward" the wreckage belonging to the plane carrying Rivera and six other people to Toluca, outside Mexico City, from Monterrey, where the singer who has sold 15 million records had just given a concert.

"There is nothing recognizable, neither material nor human" in the wreckage found in the state of Nuevo Leon, Ruiz Esparza told the Televisa network. The impact was so powerful that the remains of the plane "are scattered over an area of 250 to 300 meters. It is almost unrecognizable."

No cause was given for the plane's crash, but its wreckage was found near the town of Iturbide in Mexico's Sierra Madre Oriental, where the terrain is very rough.

The Learjet 25, number N345MC, took off from Monterrey at 3:30 a.m. local time and was reported missing about 10 minutes later. It was registered to Starwood Management of Las Vegas, Nevada, according to FAA records. It was built in 1969 and had a current registration through 2015.

Media and celebrities in Mexico sent condolences to Rivera's family, but authorities still had not confirmed that she was aboard the plane and said there will be an investigation to identify the remains found.

"My friend! Why? There is no consolation. God, please help me!" said Mexican pop singer Paulina Rubio on her official Twitter account. Singer Miguel Bose, who appears on the Mexican show "The Mexican Voice" along with Rivera, wrote on his Twitter account: "My dear Jenni, you will always be in my heart. Forever. I love you."

The Televisa network announced a special program of "The Mexican Voice" in her honor.

Also believed aboard the plane were her publicist, Arturo Rivera, her lawyer, makeup artist and the flight crew.

The 43-year-old Rivera who was born and raised in Long Beach, California, is one of the biggest stars of the Mexican regional style known as grupero music, which is influenced by the norteno, cumbia and ranchero styles.

Though drug trafficking was the theme of some of her songs, she was not considered a singer of "narco corridos," or ballads glorifying drug lords like other groups, such as Los Tigres del Norte. She was better known for singing about her troubles in love and disdain for men.

The so-called "Diva de la Banda" was beloved by fans on both sides of the border for songs such as "De Contrabando" and "La Gran Senora."

Her parents were Mexicans who had migrated to the United States. Two of her five brothers, Lupillo and Juan Rivera, are also well-known singers of grupero music.

Although the she studied business administration, her passion for music was always present.

She formally debuted on the music scene in 1995 with the release of her album "Chacalosa". Due to its success, she recorded two more independent albums, "We Are Rivera" and "Farewell to Selena," a tribute album to slain singer Selena that helped expand her following.

At the end of the 1990s, Rivera was signed by Sony Music and released two more albums. But widespread success came for her when she joined Fonovisa and released her 2005 album titled "Partier, Rebellious and Daring."

She recently won two Billboard Mexican Music Awards: Female Artist of the Year and Banda Album of the Year for "Joyas prestadas: Banda." She was nominated to the Latin Grammy in 2002, 2008 and 2011.

Besides being a singer, she is also a businesswoman and actress, appearing in the indie film Filly Brown, which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival, as the incarcerated mother of Filly Brown.

She was filming the third season of "I love Jenni," which followed her as she shared special moments with her children and as she toured through Mexico and the United States. She also has the reality shows: "Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis and Raq-C" and her daughter's "Chiquis 'n Control."

Controversy often surrounded Rivera.

In 2009, she was detained at the Mexico City airport when she declared $20,000 in cash but was really carrying $52,167. She was taken into custody. She said it was an innocent mistake and authorities gave her the benefit of the doubt and released her.

In 2011, her brother Juan assaulted a drunken fan at a popular fair in Guanajuato after the man verbally attacked Jenni.

In the face of heavy criticism among her fans and on social networks, Rivera publicly apologized for the incident during a concert in Mexico City, telling her fans: "Thank you for accepting me as I am, with my virtues and defects."

On Saturday night, Rivera had given a concert before thousands of fans in Monterrey. After the concert she gave a press conference during which she spoke of her emotional state following her recent divorce from former Major League Baseball pitcher Esteban Loaiza, who played for teams including the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I can't get caught up in the negative because that destroys you. Perhaps trying to move away from my problems and focus on the positive is the best I can do. I am a woman like any other and ugly things happen to me like any other woman," she said Saturday night. "The number of times I have fallen down is the number of times I have gotten up."

The mother of five children and grandmother of two had announced in October that she was divorcing Loaiza after two years of marriage. It was her third marriage.

She was proud to present herself as a Latina woman with a down-to-earth persona struggling to give a good life to her children.

"I am the same as the public, as my fans," she told The Associated Press in an interview last March.

There have been several high-profile crashes involving Learjets, known as swift, longer-distance passenger aircraft popular with corporate executives, entertainers and government officials.

A Learjet carrying pro-golfer Payne Stewart and five others crashed in northeastern South Dakota in 1999. Investigators said the plane lost cabin pressure and all on board died after losing consciousness for lack of oxygen. The aircraft flew for several hours on autopilot before running out of fuel and crashing in a corn field.

Former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker was severely injured in a 2008 Learjet crash in South Carolina that killed four people.

That same year, a Learjet slammed into rush-hour traffic in a posh Mexico City neighborhood, killing Mexico's No. 2 government official, Interior Secretary Juan Camilo Mourino, and eight others on the plane, plus five people on the ground.

Google?s Siri-competitor, Google Now, could be coming to Chrome

Google?s Siri competitor, Google Now, could be moving from Android-only devices onto Windows and Mac desktops, according to reports from CNET.

CNET is reporting,??Chrome team programmers accepted the addition of a ?skeleton for Google Now for Chrome? to the Google browser yesterday, an early step in a larger project to show Google Now notifications in Chrome.?

Google Now was released mid-summer this year and so far has only been something that the owners of the latest 4.0+ Android devices could get to use. ?Google Now is the company?s answer to Apple?s Siri; the service performs certain tasks, such as providing directions or opening applications, based on voice commands.

Apart from voice operation Google Now?s box of tricks include providing automatic weather, sports, and flight information based on users? locations and previous searches. Its main selling point it that it can work out a user?s typical daily commute and provide driving and transit information in real-time.

Described as a killer feature for Android devices the service has been compared favourably to Siri but due to the relative low number of Android Jelly Bean users it hasn?t become a mainstream Google product yet.

The likely reasons for releasing a version of Google Now for Chrome would be to encourage more users to remain with Android when upgrading their smartphones and to keep users in the big G?s ecosystem.

It?s a smart move from Google, which would allow it to capitalize on its large number of Chrome users to boost its growing number of Android 4+ users (depending on which report you read Chrome is vying for second place with Firefox in the browser wars or has already overtaken Mozilla?s flagship product).

So how likely is this? Well, Google Chrome developer rumours have a habit of being right ? the last one we reported was the possible release of Chrome for Android, so it?s quite appropriate that an Android service is now (possibly) coming to Chrome.

That said, it?s early days, so don?t expect this to be appearing the Chrome Web Store any time soon.

(AP) ? Hundreds of same-sex couples across Washington state started picking up marriage licenses Thursday as a voter-approved law legalizing gay marriage took effect.

King County, the state's largest, opened the doors to its auditor's office in Seattle just after midnight to start distributing licenses. But hundreds of people had lined up hours earlier, snaking around the building on a chilly December night. The county said it issued 489 marriage licenses Thursday, mostly to same-sex couples, breaking a previous daily record of 212. On average, King County issues 75 to 100 marriage licenses a day.

The mood in Seattle was festive in the overnight waiting line.

"We waited a long time. We've been together 35 years, never thinking we'd get a legal marriage. Now I feel so joyous I can't hardly stand it," said 85-year-old Pete-e Petersen, who with her partner, 77-year-old Jane Abbott Lighty, were the first to get a license.

After meeting 35 years ago on a blind date in Sacramento, Lighty and Petersen plan to get married Sunday. The couple has been out buying shoes and clothes for the wedding.

Washington state now joins several other states that allow gay and lesbian couples to wed. Gov. Chris Gregoire and Secretary of State Sam Reed certified the election results of Referendum 74 on Wednesday afternoon, and the law took effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

R-74 had asked voters to either approve or reject the state law legalizing same-sex marriage that legislators passed earlier this year. That law was signed by Gregoire in February but was put on hold pending the outcome of the election. Nearly 54 percent of voters approved the measure.

The law doesn't require religious organizations or churches to marry gay or lesbian couples.

Because the state has a three-day waiting period, the earliest that weddings can take place is Sunday. Same-sex couples who previously were married in another state that allows gay marriage, like Massachusetts, will not have to get remarried in Washington state. Their marriages became valid here Thursday, when the law took effect.

Vicky Dalton, the Spokane County auditor, was designated as a point person for all of the counties preparing for same-sex marriage licenses. She said that as of 4 p.m. Thursday, more than 760 marriage licenses had been issued statewide to same-sex couples, with more than half of them being issued in King County.

At the Thurston County courthouse Thursday morning, Deb Dulaney, 54, and Diane McGee, 64, both of Olympia, arrived just before 9 a.m. The couple have been together for 16 years and moved to Washington state in 2005 from California, where they were registered as domestic partners.

McGee said they wanted to get married there but were unable to before voters passed 2008's Proposition 8, the amendment that outlawed gay marriage after it had been approved by court ruling. A federal court has since struck down Prop. 8, but an appeal on that case is still pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Dulaney and McGee registered as domestic partners in Seattle in 2005, and then through the state when the state's domestic partnership law passed in 2007. Now they wanted to take that final step of marriage. They haven't set a wedding date but said a simple service is planned within the 60 days that their license is valid.

"I feel much more moved by it than I thought I would," Dulaney said. "I thought we were just going to come here, get the paperwork and go home. But now, it's like, 'whoa.'"

"It's for real now," McGee told her.

Last month, Washington, Maine and Maryland became the first states to pass same-sex marriage by popular vote. They joined six other states ? New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont ? and the District of Columbia, which had already enacted laws or issued court rulings permitting same-sex marriage.

Couples in Maryland also started picking up marriage licenses Thursday, though their licenses won't take effect until Jan. 1.

"I really imagined my life as being just with a partner and never having a wife, so to have this day come about and to be a part of it, it means everything to me," said Kim Hinken, who was the first person to get a marriage license in Anne Arundel County, Md.'s Circuit Court. The 52-year-old Edgewater resident said she has waited nearly 10 years to become legally married to Adrianne Eathorne.

Maine's law takes effect Dec. 29. There's no waiting period in Maine, and people can start marrying just after midnight.

In addition to private ceremonies that will start taking place across Washington state this weekend, Seattle City Hall will open for several hours Sunday, and several local judges are donating their time to marry more than 140 couples starting at 10 a.m. In Olympia, a group of local judges has offered to perform wedding ceremonies just after midnight on Sunday at the Thurston County courthouse.

Washington state has had a domestic partnership law in place since 2007. The initial law granted couples about two dozen rights, including hospital visitation and inheritance rights when there is no will. It was expanded a year later, and then again in 2009, when lawmakers completed the package with the so-called "everything but marriage" law that was ultimately upheld by voters later that year.

This year, lawmakers passed the law allowing gay marriage, and Gregoire signed it in February. Opponents gathered enough signatures for a referendum, putting the law on hold before it could take effect.

Unemployment rate drops to lowest in 4 years

1 day

Despite a late October wallop from Superstorm Sandy and Washington?s ongoing pummeling of business and consumer confidence, the U.S. economy isn?t down for the count.

The fiscal cliff, though, could still deliver a knockout punch.

The U.S. economy generated a stronger-than-expected 146,000 jobs in November, helping to trim the jobless rate to 7.7 percent, a four year low, the government reported Friday.

?It looks like the job market is holding firm,? said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody?s Analytics. ?That?s encouraging in light of the fiscal uncertainties.?

The dark cloud in the Labor Department's report, however, was a drop in the size of the work force, which signaled that some people may have given up looking for work.

Economists had expected non-farm payrolls to rise about 93,000 and the jobless rate to hold steady at 7.9 percent. Friday?s report included revisions to both the September and October data showing that 49,000 fewer jobs were created than first reported.

President Barack Obama's chief economist gave an upbeat assessment of the report, but warned that more needs to be done, as he has done for several months.

"While more work remains to be done, today's employment report provides further evidence that the U.S. economy is continuing to heal from the wounds inflicted by the worst downturn since the Great Depression," said Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

The government said Superstorm Sandy which slammed the densely populated East Coast in late October did not have a substantive effect on employment last month.

"Our analysis leads us to conclude that Hurricane Sandy did not substantively impact the national employment and unemployment estimates for November," said John Galvin, acting commissioner at the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

But analysts noted that the report may be revised in coming months as more complete data is available. The mid-month government survey may have missed some Northeast households still displaced by the superstorm.

?I think these numbers will be revised as they get more information,? said Zandi. ?The survey responses probably were very weak coming from New York and New Jersey.?

Analysts say the latest monthly jobs data is one more sign that the U.S. economy is holding its own after four years of the weakest recovery from a recession in half a century.

"Pent-up demand is forcing the housing market higher, pent-up demand is forcing the vehicle market higher. Consumer finances are very much improved, said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JP Morgan Funds. "Everything is actually pretty primed here. It?s still a 2 percent economy but it has the potential to do more than that if we can reduce the amount of uncertainty in Washington."

Given the ongoing political gamesmanship over a two-year budget battle, that may be a tall order. Congressional Republicans and White House officials continue to spar over competing plans to head off a looming half-trillion-dollar package of tax hikes and spending cuts that could send the recovery back into recession.

Concerns about that have sapped some consumer confidence even as the economy is in the midst of the crucial holiday shopping season. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary reading of the overall index on consumer sentiment plunged to 74.5 in early December, the lowest level since August. It was far below November's figure of 82.7 and the median forecast of 82.4 among economists polled by Reuters.

The uncertainty stems from a variety of scenarios that could unfold well into next year, including another debilitating Congressional debate over raising the government?s borrowing authority. Last July?s battle over the debt ceiling that left the Treasury within days of default was resolved by the agreement that produced the fiscal cliff package. The government is expected to reach its current borrowing limit sometime early next year.

?The worst outcome would, of course, be complete stalemate, so that we go off the fiscal cliff and hit the ground hard," said Nigel Gault of IHS Global Insight. "The resulting fiscal contraction ? worth around 3.8 percent of GDP ? would be sufficient to drive the economy back into recession."

Beyond overcoming their corrosive political differences, Congress and the White House are trying to strike a balance that demonstrates real progress toward balancing the budget without the recessionary extremes of the package set to take effect in a few weeks. Even if a deal is reached, though, it will include more modest cuts in federal spending and taxes increases, which will represent some tightening of fiscal policy.

First Read: Boehner says 'no progress' toward resolving fiscal cliff

To help offset to contraction of money flowing through the system, the Federal Reserve, meanwhile, has its foot hard on its accelerator, pumping new cash into the economy at the rate of $40 billion a month. Fed officials launched the latest round of pump-priming in September, saying the economy isn?t making jobs fast enough. Lower rates on home mortgages have allowed millions of Americans to refinance their mortgages, cutting their money payments and pumping more cash into household budgets.

Fed policymakers meet on Tuesday and Wednesday next week and aren?t expected to change course, given the ongoing threat of the budget stalemate

"The Fed will want to do what it can to keep monetary policy easy. They would not want to do anything right now that would be a monetary tightening," said Jerry Webman, chief economist at Oppenheimer Funds in New York.

3 beers Americans no longer drink

3 hrs.

While sales of specialty, craft, and small-market beers have improved dramatically, many of the traditional, full-calorie beers that were once the staples of most breweries have fallen behind. In the five years ending in 2011, sales of Budweiser, which was once the top-selling beer in the country for years, have fallen by 7 million barrels. Sales of Michelob are down more than 70 percent. Based on data provided by?Beer Marketer?s INSIGHTS, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the nine large -- or once-large -- beer brands with a five-year decline in sales of 30 percent or more. After three years of declining sales, shipments of domestically sold beer are up by more than 1 percent in the United States this year. Sales of light beer and specialty beer, such as Budweiser Light Platinum, Shock Top, and Blue Moon, have been the driving force in the resurgence of U.S. breweries.

24/7 Wall St.: States That Drink the Most Beer

While regular, full-calorie beer was once the mainstream, now light has become the primary beer of choice. Budweiser, once by far the most popular beer, has now fallen to third place in domestic sales, with 17.2 million barrels shipped in 2011, compared to Coors Light?s 17.4 million. The U.S. beer leader is, by a long shot, Bud Light, with 39.15 million barrels sold last year.

Budweiser did not quite make the 30 percent decline in sales cutoff for our list, but many other traditional brews did. Old Milwaukee, Milwaukee?s Best and Miller Genuine Draft have all lost 50 percent of their sales since 2006. Michelob shipped 500,000 barrels domestically in 2006, but sold just 140,000 in 2011.

While light beer has supplanted full-calorie beer in popularity, sales of most leading light brands have been flat over the past several years. In fact, many of the beers on our list with the biggest declines are light beers that either didn?t catch on or faded out of popularity. ?In an interview with 24/7 Wall St.,?Beer Marketer?s INSIGHTS?executive editor Eric Shepard explained that it is specialty beers and craft beers -- not light beer -- that have eaten into sales of traditional full-calorie beer in the past year.

Shepard explained that like most major brand-centered industries, the beer industry has entered a period of aggressively marketing new brands and flavors. ?I think that part of the reason that brewers felt we had three down years was primarily the economy... but it was also a lack of innovation, and so now you?re seeing [the beer industry] rev up these things,? he said. ?The buzzword for this year was innovation.?

To combat the growing popularity of craft brews, major breweries such as Anheuser-Busch Inbev and MillerCoors have aggressively marketed their own specialty beer. Bud Light Platinum, which debuted during the Super Bowl, has been very successful, beating most expectations. Shock Top, also produced by Anheuser-Busch, sold 600,000 barrels last year, more than double the previous year?s sales. Another Belgian white beer, Blue Moon, which is sold by MillerCoors, was the 18th-most popular beer?sold?last year. Shepard expects the focus on nontraditional brews to continue at least through next year. This will likely further reduce sales of the declining brands on our list.

?24/7 Wall St.: The Best and Worst Run States in America

24/7 Wall St. identified the nine beers Americans no longer drink based on INSIGHTS top 50 beer brands with at least 500,000 barrels in sales in either 2006 or 2011 with sales declines of 30 percent or more over the same period. Sales for flavored malt beverages and craft beers were excluded from the analysis.

These are the beers Americans no longer drink.

1. Michelob

????????? Sales loss (2006-2011):?72.0 percent

????????? Brewer:?Anheuser-Busch InBev

????????? Barrels sold (2011):?140,000

American consumers have abandoned Michelob -- a lager brewed since 1896 -- at a faster rate than any other beer. From 2006 to 2011, sales declined from 500,000 barrels to 140,000, with a 20 percent drop between 2010 and 2011 alone. No other beer on this list sold less than Michelob. The next-lowest selling beer, Amstel Light, still sold 200,000 barrels more than Michelob last year. The brand has not always struggled. According to?Beer Marketer?s INSIGHTS??Eric Shepard, ?the superpremium category -- basically between Budweiser and the imports -- Michelob pretty much had that to itself for many years.?

24/7 Wall St.: 13 Pro Teams Running Out of Fans

2. Michelob Light

????????? Sales loss (2006-2011):?66.3 percent

????????? Brewer:?Anheuser-Busch InBev

????????? Barrels sold (2011):?425,000

From 2006 to 2011, shipments of Michelob Light fell by 66.3 percent, more than any other major light beer in the U.S. While sales of Michelob Light declined, sales of Michelob Ultra -- introduced in 2002, with just 95 calories per 12 ounces -- rose by 10.3 percent from 2006 to 2011. Anheuser-Busch InBev no longer prominently markets the beers on its websites alongside the better-selling Michelob Ultra. Between 2010-2011, sales of Michelob light fell by 19 percent, more than all but two of the top brands we reviewed.

3. Budweiser Select

????????? Sales loss (2006-2011):?60.8 percent

????????? Brewer:?Anheuser-Busch InBev

????????? Barrels sold (2011):?775,000

Budweiser Select, introduced in 2005, claims to offer a ?distinctively full flavor,? with just 99 calories per 12-ounces -- roughly the same as Michelob Ultra. The brand has not sold well since its introduction, with sales declining by 1.2 million barrels between 2006 and 2011 -- more than all but a few top brands. In 2009, Anheuser-Busch InBev also introduced Budweiser Select 55, which the company describes as ?the lightest beer in the world with fewer calories than any other beer option currently available.?

Medical Fitness Is a Rising Priority for Most Health Systems

Dec 07 2012

NexCore attended the 21st Medical Fitness Association (MFA) annual conference in New Orleans last week. ?We value our membership in the MFA, which is the organization of medical fitness centers that differentiates from health clubs by offering a medically-prescribed and supervised program of preventative fitness.?

At this year?s conference, there was lots of buzz about integration of fitness into the delivery of healthcare, where physicians and outpatient services are co-located in a facility with medical fitness.? Integration can mean many things, but the goal is to have physicians involved in programs such as ?Exercise is Medicine? where they ?prescribe? visits to the fitness center and follow their patients? progress.? Integration can also mean the implementation of medical fitness into the patient-centered medical home model of care, the use of telemedicine, and the shared use of electronic medical records.? To us, integration also means designing facilities that create functional adjacencies between providers and medical fitness?for example, an orthopedic surgeon who performed an ACL repair spontaneously ?sees? the patient while they are in physical therapy and in the gym after therapy.? Or, the flow of patients in and out of medical fitness routes patients near the entries to physicians so their practices receive a marketing benefit from the patient traffic.

Another popular topic at the conference was the movement to population management and how medical fitness will play an important part. Several presenters discussed measuring the value of medical fitness programs by showing readmission rates of members vs. non-members, number of referrals from membership to inpatient and outpatient services, and employee health outcomes ? hospitals with large numbers of self-insured employees are providing credits on healthcare insurance premiums for employees who use the fitness center and agree to health assessments and biometric screening, which are conducted at the fitness center.?

The bottom line?medical fitness is a rising priority for most health systems, which are looking at facilities that consolidate and reorganize physician care and outpatient services.? We spoke with a few directors of successful integrated medical fitness centers who say they are receiving requests from other health systems for site tours, and some are conducting as many as 2 to 4 tours per week. Healthcare reform is undoubtedly moving forward, and we?re excited about being involved in the business of creating facilities that help improve community health.
