Earth's magnetosphere behaves like a sieve

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? ESA's quartet of satellites studying Earth's magnetosphere, Cluster, has discovered that our protective magnetic bubble lets the solar wind in under a wider range of conditions than previously believed.

Earth's magnetic field is our planet's first line of defence against the bombardment of the solar wind. This stream of plasma is launched by the Sun and travels across the Solar System, carrying its own magnetic field with it.

Depending on how the solar wind's interplanetary magnetic field -- IMF -- is aligned with Earth's magnetic field, different phenomena can arise in Earth's immediate environment.

One well-known process is magnetic reconnection, where magnetic field lines pointing in opposite directions spontaneously break and reconnect with other nearby field lines. This redirects their plasma load into the magnetosphere, opening the door to the solar wind and allowing it to reach Earth.

Under certain circumstances this can drive 'space weather', generating spectacular aurorae, interrupting GPS signals and affecting terrestrial power systems.

In 2006, Cluster made the surprising discovery that huge, 40 000 km swirls of plasma along the boundary of the magnetosphere -- the magnetopause -- could allow the solar wind to enter, even when Earth's magnetic field and the IMF are aligned.

These swirls were found at low, equatorial latitudes, where the magnetic fields were most closely aligned.

These giant vortices are driven by a process known as the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) effect, which can occur anywhere in nature when two adjacent flows slip past each other at different speeds.

Examples include waves whipped up by wind sliding across the surface of the ocean, or in atmospheric clouds.

Analysis of Cluster data has now found that KH waves can also occur at a wider range of magnetopause locations and when the IMF is arranged in a number of other configurations, providing a mechanism for the continuous transport of the solar wind into Earth's magnetosphere.

"We found that when the interplanetary magnetic field is westward or eastward, magnetopause boundary layers at higher latitude become most subject to KH instabilities, regions quite distant from previous observations of these waves," says Kyoung-Joo Hwang of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and lead author of the paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

"In fact, it's very hard to imagine a situation where solar wind plasma could not leak into the magnetosphere, since it is not a perfect magnetic bubble."

The findings confirm theoretical predictions and are reproduced by simulations presented by the authors of the new study.

"The solar wind can enter the magnetosphere at different locations and under different magnetic field conditions that we hadn't known about before," says co-author Melvyn Goldstein, also from Goddard Space Flight Center.

"That suggests there is a 'sieve-like' property of the magnetopause in allowing the solar wind to continuously flow into the magnetosphere."

The KH effect is also seen in the magnetospheres of Mercury and Saturn, and the new results suggest that it may provide a possible continuous entry mechanism of solar wind into those planetary magnetospheres, too.

"Cluster's observations of these boundary waves have provided a great advance on our understanding of solar wind -- magnetosphere interactions, which are at the heart of space weather research," says Matt Taylor, ESA's Cluster project scientist.

"In this case, the relatively small separation of the four Cluster satellites as they passed through the high-latitude dayside magnetopause provided a microscopic look at the processes ripping open the magnetopause and allowing particles from the Sun direct entry into the atmosphere."

(AP) ? From postseason bystander to starting the World Series opener. That's how far Barry Zito has come in two years to resurrect his career.

The resurgent left-hander will pitch Game 1 for the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night against Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers.

Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday he will go with Zito, who has turned around his career this year. His stellar outing in a 5-0 victory on Friday night in Game 5 of the NL championship series at Busch Stadium helped San Francisco rally from a 3-1 series deficit against the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals to return to the World Series for the second time in three years.

Left off the postseason roster for all three rounds when the Giants won it all in 2010, Zito made a conscious decision to find his way by just plain having fun again ? forgetting one bad start and moving on to the next. Whatever he has done to change his mental approach, it has certainly paid off on the mound.

It doesn't hurt he now has four pitches to baffle batters aside from just that nasty curveball that has defined his career back in the early days of the Big Three ? with Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder ? across the bay with the Oakland Athletics.

"It's hard to sum it up in one answer," Zito said after beating the Cardinals. "It's just a plethora of things that I've done and gone through here with the Giants. But the most important thing was to come out and give everything I've got."

The Giants have won Zito's last 13 starts dating to Aug. 7. The 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner with Oakland went 15-8 for his most wins since joining the Giants on a $126 million, seven-year contract before the 2007 season.

And what ideal timing for Zito to shine in a season that two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum faltered.

"He's been through a lot, obviously. He took the beatings," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said of Zito. "He's always been a stand-up guy, he's never stopped working. In his own way he's never stopped believing and he's made changes. He's made changes when he had to. I actually don't think other than when he first came here that he was supposed to be the lead dog in the staff as it turned out the young guys were so good so fast. You look back in Oakland he was just one of the group. I don't think the money ever bothered him."

Still, when Zito won Game 5 last week, he said how special it was to deliver in his most important start yet of his 13-year big league career.

Zito has been so good he's trending on Twitter with his own hashtag ? and, now, (hashtag)RallyZito rolls on to the World Series. Not that he's paying a lot of attention.

"I tried Twitter a couple of years ago and it was a pretty devastating experience for me," Zito said the other day with a laugh. "I learned to not check the inbox. So I got off Twitter. I'm excited that the fans are fired up."

That support sure has meant a lot to Zito, who has always said the right thing even through the down times. Bochy praised his class in handling the 2010 situation. All those boos that came from every which way for so long have turned to cheers and thunderous standing ovations.

"In this game sometimes we forget at times what we're all capable of, and I think those are the times when we struggle a little bit," Zito said.

Zito won his last five regular-season starts and seven decisions of the regular season since a loss Aug. 2 to the Mets.

He has tweaked his delivery, added a cut fastball and learned to make adjustments right away when things go wrong. Working with pitching coach Dave Righetti has helped, too.

"I think Barry really deserves most of the credit along with Dave Righetti, with them working together," Bochy said. "Sometimes in this game you've got to make changes, adjustments, that's what the game is about. And Barry's done that. He's a little different than what he was when he won the Cy Young. Maybe he doesn't have that same velocity. So he's had to I think change his style of pitching a little bit. And he's come up with the cutter. And I think he's pitching down more than he used to."

Milky Way's black hole getting ready for snack

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Get ready for a fascinating eating experience in the center of our galaxy. The event involves a black hole that may devour much of an approaching cloud of dust and gas known as G2.

A supercomputer simulation prepared by two Lab physicists and a former postdoc suggests that some of G2 will survive, although its surviving mass will be torn apart, leaving it with a different shape and questionable fate.

The findings are the work of computational physicist Peter Anninos and astrophysicist Stephen Murray, both of AX division within the Weapons and Complex Integration Directorate (WCI), along with their former postdoc Chris Fragile, now an associate professor at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and his student, Julia Wilson.

They came up with six simulations, using the Cosmos++ computer code developed by Anninos and Fragile, which required more than 50,000 computing hours on 3,000 processors on the Palmetto supercomputer at Clemson University in Columbia, S.C.

Previous simulations of the upcoming event had been done in two-dimensions, but the Cosmos++ code includes 3D capability, as well as a unique "moving mesh" enhancement, allowing the simulation to more-efficiently follow the cloud's progression toward the black hole.

The black hole is known as Sgr A*. "Sgr" is the abbreviation for Sagittarius, the constellation near the center of the Milky Way. Most galaxies have a black hole at their center, some thousands of times bigger than this one.

"While this one is 3-to-4 million times as big as our sun, it has been relatively quiet," according to Murray. "It's not getting fed very much." Contrary to their name, black holes can appear very bright. That's because gas orbiting them loses energy via friction, getting hotter and brighter as it spirals inward before falling into the black hole.

The composition of the G2 cloud is still a mystery.

Astronomers originally noticed something in the region in 2002, but the first detailed determinations of its size and orbit came only this year. The dust in the cloud has been measured at about 550 Kelvin, approximately twice as hot as the surface temperature on Earth. The gas, mostly hydrogen, is about 10,000 Kelvin, or almost twice as hot as the surface of the sun.

Its origin is still unknown.

Murray says: "The speculation ranges from it having been an old star that had kind of a burp and lost some of its outer atmosphere, to something that was trying to be a planet and couldn't quite manage it because the environment was too hot."

As the cloud approaches the black hole and begins to fall into what Murray describes as "a gravity well" beginning next September, it will begin to shed energy, causing it to heat to incredibly high temperatures, visible to radio and X-ray telescopes on Earth as well as orbiting satellites such as NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.

But it won't be a collision course.

The point at which a stellar object can no longer escape being swallowed by a black hole is known as the Schwarzschild radius, a quantity whose value depends on the black hole's mass, the speed of light and the gravitational constant.

The cloud will actually pass far enough away that it will escape the point of no return by approximately 2,200 Schwarzschild radii, which in this case is about 200 times as far as Earth is from the sun.

But the supercomputer simulations show that the cloud will not survive the encounter.

According to Anninos: "There's too much dynamical friction that it experiences through hydrodynamic instabilities and tidal stretching from the black hole. So a lot of its kinetic energy and angular momentum will be dissipated away and it will just sort of break up into some sort of incoherent structure. Much of it will join the rest of the hot accretion disk around the black hole, or just fall and get captured by the black hole. It will lose a lot of its energy but not all of it. It will become so diffuse that it's unlikely that any remnant of the gas will continue on its orbital track."

The close encounter will take several months. The entire event is predicted to last less than a decade.

The simulation is posted on the Web. It shows the cloud modeled as a simple gas sphere, near the point in its orbit where it was first discovered. As it approaches Sgr A*, a process known as tidal stretching increasingly distorts the cloud. By the end of 2012, the cloud will be nearly five times longer than it is wide.

Along with tidal stretching, the cloud also experiences resistance in the form of ram pressure as it tries to plow through the hot interstellar gas that already fills the space around Sgr A*. The interactions of G2 with this background gas cause further disruptions to the cloud from Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. Collectively, these effects act to strip some material from the cloud and feed it into Sgr A*.

An article describing the simulation research will appear in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

Samsung will stop selling displays to Apple next year

Samsung Display will stop selling to Apple

Samsung Display has announced that they will be ending their display contract with Apple and will no longer supply LCD panels starting next year. Lower margins on Apple devices are said to be a primary reason for the split. Apple has long used Samsung displays for their iOS devices, and in the first part of this year, Samsung Display shipped 15 million LCDs to Apple, their single largest supplier of displays. However, they shipped less than 3 million displays to Apple in the last quarter, and are reportedly not providing any panels for the iPad mini. Additionally, Samsung Display may be making room for other, higher-margin partners, as the Korea Times reports:

According to multiple sources contacted by The Korea Times, Samsung Electronics? handset division and Amazon are increasing their orders for displays used in tablets, which is a sufficient substitute for possible losses from cutting the relationship with the iPad maker.

This comes as Apple has moved to decrease their reliance on Samsung as a parts supplier. TSMC supposedly has the contract for the manufacture of quad-core A-series processors starting late next year. LG Display and Japan?s Sharp, already Apple?s partners, will undoubtedly see their display orders from Apple increase. Both companies, along with Japan Display, currently provide the in-cell touch panels for the iPhone 5, and are undoubtedly making panels for the iPad mini. Given the severe decrease in orders for the last part of the year, it seems that Apple has already been moving away from Samsung displays for some time, and Apple's other partners should have little trouble stepping in. As relations between Apple and Samsung deteriorate, other companies move in to fill the gaps, and given the profit they stand to make on Apple's contracts, they are perfectly happy to do so.

Commentator Tony Greig diagnosed with lung cancer ? Cricket - Bettor

Commentator Tony Greig diagnosed with lung cancer ? Cricket News Update

Former England captain and famed television commentator Tony Greig has been diagnosed with lung cancer, although the stage to which the disease has progressed, and the course of treatment, is yet to be confirmed.

The 66-year-old is scheduled to undergo a biopsy later this week, which will reveal the finer details regarding his disease. Meanwhile, the former England batsman maintained an optimistic attitude, claiming he intends to fight the illness with the help of his family.

?I have had a few scrapes in my life and this is another one,? Greig said while speaking to the Sunday Telegraph. ?[His wife] Vivian and I are going to put the boxing gloves on and fight this like we've never fought anything before.?

When asked about whether he would be taking up commentating duties with Channel Nine over the Australian summer, Greig did not commit himself, claiming the summer remained uncertain, while his family took precedence.

?At this stage, the summer is totally up in the air. My priority, 100%, is my family. They will come first,? said Greig.

Ian Healy, former Australian wicketkeeper and Grieg?s commentary colleague at Channel Nine, backed the former batsman to overcome the disease, claiming his resilience, and the support from family and friends, would enable him to pull through.

?... one thing he is though is tough so Greigy is at better chances than anyone to get through it,? said Healy. ?He has got a lovely family so he will have great support and certainly no shortage of it from us.?

Early signs of the disease can be traced to May this year, when Greig was diagnosed with bronchitis. The disease persisted with little to no improvement, and the former right-hander underwent a series of tests after the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka this month, which revealed a small lesion on his right lung.

About a fortnight ago, following his return to Australia, he had a large amount of fluid drained from the lung, and further tests revealed that he had lung cancer. The diagnosis makes Greig one among a host of cricketing personalities who have recently been diagnosed with cancer, among them former New Zealand batsman Martin Crowe, and Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.

95% Searching for Sugar Man

All Critics (101) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (96) | Rotten (5)

The search for a long-lost pop icon has an unexpected payoff.

[A] moving, lyrical account ...

Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.

If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.

An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.

Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.

Part music documentary, part mystery, all inspirational homage to unrecognized genius everywhere.

For the most part an endearing documentary about mystery Bob Dylan-like singer Sixto Rodriguez.

An amazing story. If music is the glue of the world then Rodriguez is the super glue.

Does a nice job of presenting the mystery and history of Rodriguez... but seems incomplete, and biased in favor of its predetermined narrative.

Rodriguez, once he emerges from the mists, appears to be a sweet, decent - and remarkably intact - soul. One wonders if he had achieved his rock 'n' roll dreams, would his daughters have turned out so well?

There's a fascinating story in the rise and fall of singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, "the Latin Bob Dylan," and it's too bad that the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" doesn't tell enough of it.

A soulful, lip-tremblingly joyous movie that's one of the more affecting experiences I've had in a cinema this year.

Engrossing even when it's a little unfocused.

One of the most bizarre pop music documentaries ever...a singularly fascinating true-life tale that many of its participants still find difficult to believe.

...it isn't merely the content that makes Searching for Sugar Man so affecting: it's the way that Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul sets up the story and peels away the mystery of Rodriguez, one layer at time.

A mystery as compelling as any fictional detective story.

The first half of this film is mysterious whereas the second half is wonderfully inspiring. It's proof that truth really is stranger than fiction.

This is a fine documentary; insightful and entertaining with a genteel approach to uncovering a figure so close to the hearts of an unexpected fan base.

A celebration of an artist and the power of art to transcend time and place

Much credit to director Malik Bendjelloul for surprising this cynical and desensitised film watcher.

For those familiar with the story of Rodriguez, this engaging documentary on his substantial success in South Africa will prove both illuminating and bemusing.

I was instantly hooked by this unique documentary...If you are a traveller on the road of life, don't miss this unforgettable treasure of a film

This is not only the best documentary I've seen this year, it's one that shows other documentaries how to do it.

Searching for Sugar Man reminds us that a wise man knows lasting riches are never the result of record sales.

Searching for Sugar Man" is a saga about the power of music, living life on one's own terms and the joy of second chances.

An excited Drake: 'I got my high school diploma'

NEW YORK (AP) ? A day after earning his high school diploma, an excited Drake performed hit songs for a few hundred people at an event for Tyra Banks.

The 25-year-old told the crowd Thursday night that he took a small break from music and "spent some time going back to high school."

"I got my high school diploma," he said with excitement as the crowd roared.

Drake also posted on Twitter late Wednesday that he earned a 97 percent on his final exam and an 88 percent in his last class through work with a private tutor. The Canadian dropped out of high school, ironically, to star in the high school TV series "Degrassi: The Next Generation." He played the role of Jimmy Brooks.

The Grammy-nominated musician performed hits like "Best I Ever Had," ''Find Your Love" and "The Motto" at Banks' first annual Flawsome Ball for The Tyra Banks TZONE Foundation, her organization aimed at developing confidence in girls. He dedicated his song, "Make Me Proud," to the supermodel.

Rosario Dawson, Clay Aiken and Estelle also attended the gala event in New York at Capitale.

New Book Boils Down the Best Small-Business Tips : The World ...

Imagine being in a position to interview the world's greatest entrepreneurs and small-business owners every week for over half a decade. Imagine the tips, techniques, lessons and insights you'd gain.

You'd hear TOMS Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie advising you to "hire staffers who match your target demographic." Or Zipcar CEO Scott Griffith telling you to "tackle unpleasant tasks first thing in the morning." And Bubbles Galore Car & Dog Wash owner John Good suggest that you "borrow through peer-to-peer lending." You'd hear Woopaah founder Stella Grizont's advice on how to "respond to negative customer feedback positively," while Arien Rozelle of Feeling Anxious PR coaches you on how to "turn your inexperience into an asset."

You could write a book based on everything you learned.

Which is exactly what JJ Ramberg, host of MSNBC's popular program?Your Business (featured here on OPEN Forum) has done. Along with her MSNBC colleagues Lisa Everson and Frank Silverstein, Ramberg has sifted through six years of MSNBC interviews, culled the very best tips, and compiled them into a terrific new book, It's Your Business: 183 Essential Tips That Will Transform Your Small Business.

Advice for Busy People

If ever there existed a definitive list of solid, actionable tips on how run a successful small business or start one up, this is it. Knowing that entrepreneurs have no time to waste, Ramberg presents simple and effective guidance that can be put to use right away, and shows that the secrets of small business are often less about the grand plan and more about the small details.

It's Your Business is divided into eleven chapters, each with a dozen or more tips covering the gamut of small business issues. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Jason Goldberg, founder of Fab.com: "Don't choose investors based on valuation alone."

  • Lean Startup author Eric Ries: "Don't be deceived by paying attention to the wrong numbers."

  • Ross Intelisano, partner of New York law firm Rich, Intelisano & Katz LLP: "Make your recommendation and then step aside."

  • Michael Bagley, owner of Fav's Treatery in Florida, NY: "Don't decrease price; increase value."

  • Stella Grizont, managing director of Ladies Who Lunch and founder of Woopaah: "Respond to negative customer feedback positively."

  • Ramon Ray, editor of Smallbiztechnology.com and Melinda Emerson, editor of Succeedasyourownboss.com: "Earn business credibility by being an ongoing presence."

  • ?Scott Gerber, founder of the Young Entrepreneur Council: "Think like a start-up."

But Ramberg doesn't just curate the many tricks-of-the-trade from the scores of small-business owners, entrepreneurs and opinion leaders that have appeared on her show, she combines them with her own experience founding GoodSearch.com, a successful Yahoo-powered search engine that donates to charity with each search.

In fact, one of the most valuable aspects of It's Your Business is knowing that Ramberg comes from a long line of entrepreneurs, is an entrepreneur herself, and a socially responsible one at that.

For a Good Cause?

"I started my company, GoodSearch.com, in 2005," she writes. "It was a typical start-up, founded out of my one-bedroom apartment in New York City. GoodSearch is a socially responsible company that empowers people to turn their everyday actions into ways to do good. Each time someone searches the Internet, shops online or dines out, a donation is made to their favorite charity or school. More than 15 million people have used GoodSearch, and we've raised $10 million for good causes. Together with my brother and co-founder, Ken, I've dealt with all of the issues we touch on in this book."

If you've been following the political scene unfolding in Washington during the run-up to the presidential election, you'll know that small business has become a hot topic. With It's Your Business, JJ Ramberg shows you what's really happening on Main Street, tracking small-business trends and issues while helping business owners navigate an often uncertain environment.

Modern Methodist ? ECLECTIC LIVING HOME

Modern?Methodist

19Oct12

No, we are not discussing religion today but the conversion of 1868 Methodist church that now houses this sleek interior. Designer Gary Tarn skillfully adapted the space into a home that features a double height living room, 4-5 bedrooms, family room, home office, exercise pool, and a theater/music room all while preserving the church?s original exterior. A marvelous domain for family and for entertaining. My favorites are the glamourous gold wall, that sexy leather sofa, and the hanging fireplace. However, I must say I do question the somewhat random chair placement. Otherwise fabulous. ? pb

Hay Fever, Asthma Combination Linked to Lower Risk for Death ...

October 18, 2012
  • Risk for death from colorectal cancer reduced by 17 percent.
  • Allergy-related immune system responses could be potential mechanisms.
ANAHEIM, Calif. ? People with both hay fever and asthma ? but not people with only one of these two conditions ? experienced an approximately 17 percent lower risk for dying from colorectal cancer, according to data presented at the 11th Annual AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, held here Oct. 16-19, 2012.

?Having both of these conditions could indicate that you are more likely to develop allergy-related immune responses that lower your risk for developing fatal colorectal cancer,? said Eric Jacobs, Ph.D., strategic director of pharmacoepidemiology at the American Cancer Society.? ?

In an earlier study published in 2005, researchers examined data from the Cancer Prevention Study II (CPS-II), a large prospective study of more than 1 million U.S. men and women who had been followed from 1982 to 2000. Results from this initial study showed that participants with both hay fever and asthma were at lower risk for developing fatal colorectal cancer.

In the current study, researchers looked again at data from the more than 1 million participants in CPS-II who did not have cancer at the start of the study and were followed through 2008. They also examined data from the Cancer Prevention Study I, a similarly sized study, in which participants were followed from 1959 to 1972.

The combined results from the CPS-I and CPS-II studies, including more than 19,000 deaths from colorectal cancer, confirmed the findings from the earlier study: People with hay fever and asthma had an approximately 17 percent lower risk for dying from colorectal cancer. People with only hay fever or only asthma had little reduction in risk for fatal colorectal cancer. ?

Jacobs and colleagues believe that the lower risk for fatal colorectal cancer among people with both hay fever and asthma may be a result of atopy, which is the general predisposition to develop allergic responses, including those that cause allergies and asthma. According to Jacobs, it is possible that individuals with atopy may sometimes mount an allergic-like response against colon cancer cells as well.

Future research could evaluate whether an association exists between other measures of atopy, such as blood levels of the immunoglobulin E antibody, and risk for developing or dying from colorectal cancer. If such an association is found, there could be implications for development of vaccines to stimulate anticancer immune responses in patients with colorectal cancer.

?If allergy-related immune responses are lowering colorectal cancer mortality in some individuals, that would imply that a similar kind of response might be inducible by a vaccine,? Jacobs said.

AT&T and IBM create global cloud service for businesses | Networks ...

AT&T and IBM have announced a business agreement to deliver a highly secure, first-of-its-kind ?network-enabled? cloud service that uses private networks rather than the public Internet.

The companies are combining AT&T virtual private networking and IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ cloud capabilities with technology from AT&T Labs to create a new, fast and highly-secure shared cloud service.

Targeted to Fortune 1000 companies globally, the service will be offered in early 2013 as a powerful new option for clients who are deploying cloud solutions that demand high levels of security and availability. Many businesses often cite security as a key inhibitor to cloud computing adoption.

When customers of the new service connect to IBM cloud computing resources across AT&T?s virtual private network, the innovative technology tightly integrates the security protections of both, allowing customers to quickly and reliably shift information or applications between their own data centers (private clouds) and this new cloud service. This is critical for businesses that want the flexibility of the cloud but also need to protect applications and data as they move between data centers and wired or wireless computing devices such as tablets, smartphones, personal computers, retail kiosks or other machine-to-machine devices.

For example, a financial services company using the new service could move and manage critical customer data between its and IBM's cloud data centers without the data ever leaving the security protections of the virtual private network.

AT&T?s technology dynamically allocates networking resources to computing resources, automating functions that are often performed manually. This allows the network and compute resources to rapidly scale or contract in tandem to support the fluctuating demand on systems that an online retailer might experience before, during and after the holiday buying season; or that a large employer might experience before, during, and after their annual employee health benefits enrollment period.

?AT&T and IBM are delivering a new, network-enabled cloud service that marries the security and speed of AT&T?s global network with the control and management capabilities of IBM?s enterprise cloud,? said Andy Geisse, CEO of AT&T Business Solutions. ?This new service gives companies yet another way to innovate, create new value, and transform their businesses and industries.??

A key element of the cloud service is IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+, an IBM Infrastructure-as-a-Service optimized for mission-critical, enterprise workloads. As a managed and hosted cloud environment, it offers many advantages of a private cloud ? such as choice of dedicated physical servers and storage ? but also adds the scalable flexibility of a public cloud.

Customers using the new service will have access to IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+? s broad spectrum of secure managed services and be able to run processes in both public and private cloud models.

?As more organizations realize that cloud can be secure, easily managed, and a key part of their business strategy, cloud will quickly evolve as a tool for innovation rather than just for infrastructure,? said Erich Clementi, senior vice president, IBM Global Technology Services. ?We believe this new service from two recognized leaders in cloud computing provides a compelling way for large organizations to exploit cloud?s transformational power.?

The new cloud service also includes a variety of customization options to meet specific customer needs; and committed service-level agreements (SLAs) aligned to business and usage requirements to increase accountability for response time and availability.

Other features include more than 70 automated built-in security functions; and high levels of security extended to wired and wireless devices authenticated to the customer?s virtual private network.

Budgeting to Decorate a New House - Articles :: Networx

undefinedOver the years, I've had many clients, or potential clients, who purchased a new house without planning for the cost of decorating it. This isn?t just about pretty fabrics either; there are many practical considerations such as the need for privacy; heating and cooling (in the Boston area, heating and cooling cannot be overlooked), and air flow.

?

New construction homes can be fresh and exciting, but often come with bare windows and rooms that are in completely different proportions from those in older homes. New homes may have large open-space kitchens and great rooms but tiny dining rooms and formal living rooms. Furniture that fit into a standard living room in the ?old house? may be too big for the new space while suddenly the cavernous great room needs a furniture store worth of sofas and chairs to fill it up.

?

Similarly, master bedrooms are often very large and require full-scale seating areas in addition to the standard bedroom ensemble in order to cozy it up. And in all of these rooms, area rugs may suddenly be too big, or too small to fit.

?

After spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a new house, it?s frustrating indeed to have insufficient funds to adequately decorate it. Here are five tips for what to consider before you buy:

?

1. Window coverings: Assuming you want more than a basic $5 roller shade, covering all the windows in a house can average between $500 to $1000 per window for shutters, wood blinds, Hunter Douglas soft-blinds, and/or fabric window treatments. Some windows will of course be less and others may be more, but I?ve always found that this is a good range to consider.

?

2. Rugs: Area rugs or wall-to-wall carpeting begin at about $500 per room and can climb as high as $2,500 and more. Unless you have perfect hardwood flooring that you want to showcase, figure floor coverings into the budget.

?

3. Furniture: Consider how many people will be using each room on a regular basis and if there are any entertaining needs such as big family dinners during the holidays. Large rooms will need larger furniture, or several smaller furniture groupings to make them comfortable and useful.

?

4. Budget: Set up a simple spreadsheet and make a list of everything you imagine you would need to buy for each room type, and what you own that you will be reusing. Generally, this will be the same for most of the homes you will be looking at. Do a little research on the cost of new furnishings. Many retail stores have great websites where you can quickly check out the prices. When I create a budget like this for clients, I have two columns for High and Low estimates, taking into consideration retail vs. custom furnishings, plus a 10% contingency column for sales tax and delivery/set up charges. It?s not necessary to include every single item, but taking into account the big ticket items such as windows, rugs and furniture will be very helpful.

?

Break free of traditional room types. If you don?t need a formal dining room and will never use it, consider other uses for this space. It may make a great home office, play room or mediation room. If the master bedroom is too large for your existing furniture, consider using one of the smaller bedrooms and turn the master into a shared bedroom or second family room. There are no rules when it comes to room assignments, so when looking at new homes, consider all the possibilities.

(AP) ? Myanmar has signed a deal with a British aviation enthusiast to allow the excavation of a World War II treasure: dozens of Spitfire fighter planes buried by the British almost 70 years ago.

Aviation enthusiast David J. Cundall discovered the locations of the aircraft after years of searching. The planes are believed to be in good condition, since they were reportedly packed in crates and hidden by British forces to keep them out of the hands of invading Japanese.

The British Embassy said Wednesday that the agreement was reached after discussions between President Thein Sein and British Prime Minister David Cameron during his visit to Myanmar earlier this year.

The excavation of the rare planes is slated to begin by the end of October.

The Myanma Ahlin daily reported that the excavation agreement was signed Tuesday by Director General of Civil Aviation Tin Naing Tun, Cundall on behalf of his British company DJC, and Htoo Htoo, managing director of Cundall's Myanmar partner, the Shwe Taung Paw company.

"It took 16 years for Mr. David Cundall to locate the planes buried in crates. We estimate that there are at least 60 Spitfires buried and they are in good condition," Htoo Htoo Zaw said.

"This will be the largest number of Spitfires in the world," he said. "We want to let people see those historic fighters, and the excavation of these fighter planes will further strengthen relations between Myanmar and Britain."

The British Embassy described the agreement as a chance to work with Myanmar's new reformist government "in uncovering, restoring, displaying these fighter planes."

"We hope that many of them will be gracing the skies of Britain and as discussed, some will be displayed here in Burma," said an embassy spokesman, using the old name for Myanmar.

Myanmar has since last the past year turned away from many of the repressive policies of the previous military government and patched up relations with Western nations that had previously shunned it.

Myanma Ahlin cited Transport Minister Nyan Tun Aung saying the agreement was a milestone strengthening the friendly relationship between Myanmar and Britain and amounts to the British government's recognition of the democratic reforms of President Thein Sein's new government.
