The end of the 'Lily of the Valley phenomenon' in sperm research?

According to a 2003 study by German and American scientists, a component of the Lily of the Valley scent known as Bourgeonal alters the calcium balance of human sperm and attracts the sperm. The "Lily of the Valley phenomenon" ? also the title of a book about smelling ? was born as a result of this discovery that sperm act as swimming olfactory cells which follow a "scent trail" laid by the egg. However, a detailed explanation for the Lily of the Valley phenomenon remained illusive as neither Bourgeonal nor other scents could be identified in the female sex organ. Scientists from the caesar research centre in Bonn, an Institute of the Max Planck Society, have now discovered that sperm do not function like olfactory cells - a finding that casts doubt on the assumption that scents play a role in fertilisation.

Sperm have a long journey ahead in their quest for the egg cell or ovum, and just a few of the million sperm reach their destination. The ovum supports the sperm in their quest by transmitting "chemical signposts", known as attractants. Researchers first discovered this ingenious system in sea urchins and found out that attractants control the swimming movement of the sperm by altering their calcium balance. The attraction of the sperm to the egg is referred to as "chemotaxis". Unlike in sea urchins, which release sperm and eggs into the seawater, the conditions in the narrow human fallopian tube are very difficult to emulate in experiments.

According to another model, the female sex hormone progesterone ? which is formed by cumulus cells near the ovum ? attracts the sperm. CatSper (cation channels of sperm) ion channels are responsible for the effect of the progesterone. The CatSper channels, which are found only in sperm, play an indispensable role in reproduction: men who carry a gene defect for CatSper are infertile. In a 2011 study, which was seen as a sensational breakthrough, scientists from the caesar research centre succeeded in showing that progesterone opens the CatSper channels directly and calcium flows through the channels into the sperm cell.

In their current study, the Bonn researchers demonstrate, in cooperation with scientists from the Forschungszentrum J?lich, that the Lily of the Valley scent imitates the effect of progesterone on sperm: Bourgeonal opens the CatSper channels directly ? that is without deviation via olfactory receptors and complex biochemical signalling pathways as found in olfactory cells. However, the scents only work at concentrations over 1000 times higher than progesterone. Therefore, scents only work if overdosed. The "Lily of the Valley phenomenon" is a laboratory artefact: sperm do not have an olfactory signalling pathway.

These findings provide important new insights for the sperm researchers. Why are the CatSper channels so unselective, and even react to menthol if the concentration is high enough? This "promiscuous" characteristic is probably crucial for reproduction. Using different "chemical signposts", the sperm must repeatedly reassure themselves on their difficult journey to the ovum that they are still on the right track. With the help of the CatSper channels as versatile and highly perceptive sensors, sperm can "read" the chemical milieu in the fallopian tube and find the ovum in this way. The Bonn-based researchers are now concentrating on identifying other attractants in the fallopian tube in addition to progesterone. One thing is clear at this stage: it is very unlikely that these are scents.

The new insights are also significant in medical terms. If the scientists succeed in disrupting the effect of female factors on the CatSper channels, it could lead to the development of an innovative contraceptive: the pill for men. However, such a development is still a very long way off.

War of 1812 bicentennial is a big deal ? in Canada

For a piece of history that gave us the rockets' red glare and bombs bursting in air, the War of 1812 tends to evoke a collective "Huh?" on the U.S. side of the border with Canada.

"The War of 1812 has no compelling narrative that appeals to the average American,'' said Jerald Podair, a history professor at Lawrence University in Wisconsin. "It's just a hodgepodge of buildings burning, bombs bursting in air and paintings being saved from the invaders, all for a vaguely defined purpose. "

Yet the vacuum of interest in the War of 1812 is about to get a pyrotechnic blast of attention for its bicentennial year.

Canadians, who consider the war a pivotal conflict in their nation's history, have made 200th anniversary celebrations a national priority and are opening government coffers to stage a splashy show. Also, a few American cities and states, mostly on the East Coast and Great Lakes where fighting took place, are planning commemorations that have some brushing off their war reenactment uniforms.

For Americans who may have napped during this history lesson, the War of 1812 is a bit of a dud, historians say.

"If you ask the average American what they think about the War of 1812, some will have a puzzled look and ask who fought in that war?" said Ralph Eshelman, a Maryland historian who has written about the war in the Chesapeake Bay region. Another historian joked that about the only thing most Americans know about the War of 1812 is that it began in, well, 1812.

While some U.S. boosters believe our side won, many historians say the war ? largely fought over British impressment of American seamen and interference with U.S. trade and westward expansion ? ended in a draw.

And then there's that episode when the British burned Washington. "We don't have a lot to celebrate,'' said William Fowler, a Northeastern University history professor.

Still, the war produced the words for "The Star Spangled Banner" as Francis Scott Key watched the defense of Baltimore. Andrew Jackson was elevated to hero status for his victory at the Battle of New Orleans. And Dolley Madison earned her place in the history books for saving George Washington's portrait from the British torching of the White House.

The war also "confirmed the independence of a young republic whose success and prosperity was not foreordained or guaranteed,'' said Carl Robert Keyes, an assistant professor of history at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass.

There are those in Canada, however, who view their country as a victor, largely for repelling American invaders.

"It was very much a war of independence and is seen as one of the defining chapters in Canadian history," said Ron Dale, War of 1812 bicentennial project manager for Parks Canada. To celebrate the military achievement, the Canadian government plans to spend at least $28 million on activities, including televised war vignettes and battle reenactments.

"It's a much bigger deal up here," said Jack Jedwab, executive director of the Assn. for Canadian Studies.

Canada would not exist had the American invasions of 1812-1814 not been defeated," said Lyle Williams, a spokesman for Niagara-on-the-Lake War of 1812 Bicentennial Committee.

"The war linked the disparate British provinces in shared danger against a common enemy and eased the way for confederation, the establishment of the Dominion of Canada five decades later in 1867," said Dale of Parks Canada. "Canadians take pride in their victories against overwhelming odds during the conflict but also applaud the postwar results ? 200 years of peace and an incredibly strong friendship with our American neighbors.''

Toronto is planning more than 100 events, including an 1812-related film festival and a military parade. The city, then known as York, saw its parliamentary buildings burned down by the Americans during six days of occupation, but it boasts on its bicentennial website: "The U.S. government achieved none of its objectives ? especially the conquest of British North America."

In the United States, no state is more engaged than Maryland, which sees the bicentennial as an opportunity to shine ? and rake in some tourist dollars.

The state boasts more than 500 sites with a connection to the war and is led by a governor, Martin O'Malley, who has worn a War of 1812 uniform to commemorate the defense of Baltimore.

Maryland hopes to draw more than a million visitors to Baltimore in June for its "Star-Spangled Sailabration," the kickoff of a three-year, $25-million commemoration of the 1812-1815 conflict. Events include underwater archaeological digs to recover war artifacts and an online game called "Hold the Fort" that will "cast young people in the role of Ft. McHenry's commander during the British attack ? making critical decisions regarding when to fire the guns."

License plates depicting "The Star Spangled Banner" adorn Maryland cars. Commemorative coins inscribed with "O say can you see" will be offered for sale. The state's events will culminate in 2014 with lots of fireworks, if not bombs, bursting in air over Ft. McHenry.

The Navy holds its achievements in high regard, citing victories "against great odds" over the mighty Royal Navy. U.S. Navy officials are helping organize visits by tall ships and modern vessels from navies around the world to ports on the East Coast, the Great Lakes and New Orleans, site of Jackson's celebrated victory.

A broader U.S. commemoration has been hampered by tight government budgets: Legislation to create a national commission to plan bicentennial events died in Congress. Also diminishing its promotional opportunities, the bicentennial overlaps the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Britain doesn't seem to be planning much, probably because the War of 1812 was viewed as a distraction for a country focused on defeating Napoleon, historians said. Some Canadians worry that if they make too big a deal about repelling the American invaders, it could offend their southern neighbor.

Then again, Americans may not notice.

When I first read the email about the return of The Write On Project (TWOP) and the invitation to write a post for the month of February, one word came to mind: ?Yayyy!?

Then when I saw the topic ? ?Communication? ? I got even more excited. Partly because I love anything that has to do with communicating (talking, writing, marketing, social media) but mostly because I do all of these things on a daily basis ? as both my vocation and my passion.

Turns out I?m not the only one who thinks communicating is pretty important. While trying to narrow down the angle for this piece I did a quick keyword search on Twitter and was pleasantly surprised by the number of profound tweets on the subject of ?communication?:

Um, okay, maybe that last one has nothing to do with my point, but clearly communication is one of the keys to both successful relationships and topical tweets.

And while communicating with others is pretty important, it?s the conversations that we have with ourselves that trickle down to every other aspect and relationship in our lives.

But we all know this, right? I mean the fact that our self talk is the foundation of everything, including both our failures and our successes, is pretty basic stuff, right?

And yet it remains a mystery why we indulge in so much negative self talk. Every single day of our lives.

We tell ourselves that we?re not as smart, that we?re lazy, that we?re not deserving . . .

Truth is, even our pets receive the positive reinforcement that we don?t give to ourselves. Or at least don?t give to ourselves often enough.

I know it?s not New Year?s Eve but I welcome you to join me in forming a new resolution of habits: replacing negative self talk with positive encouragement.

I?am smart. I work hard. And I deserve only the best ? as I?m sure you do too!

Working-mommy myth: They're unhappy

There?s a dirty little secret working mothers have been keeping: They?re happy.

A new study found that nearly eight out of ten employed?mothers are?enjoying being a working parent. So much for the endless talk about working mommy guilt, the mommy track and?overloaded mommies.

According to a poll by Care.com, an online caregiver resource, 78 percent of working mothers say they take pleasure in the daily grind; and 50 percent said that their own career serves as a great example for their kids.

?Most love being a great role model for their children and many feel more creative and motivated as a working-parent and even feel they add a better perspective at their jobs now that they are moms," said Katie Bugbee, managing editor of Care.com, which polled 1,000 women with children under 18 last month. (There were about 20 million working mothers with kids under 18 in the United States last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.)

In more working mommy good news, the study also found that toiling moms seem to be finding the support they need at home; and they have big plans for their?career futures.

The study found:

• 77 percent have a spouse or partner who participates in raising the kids.
• 89 percent said their significant other supported their career goals.
• 64 percent said they?feel work demands don?t interfere with their ability to be a good parent.
• 58 percent have a goal to move higher in the professional ranks.
• 78 percent said they don?t feel they were passed over for a promotion due to lack of work commitment.
• And 29 percent actually said they fee more productive after becoming a parent.

The findings weren?t all rosy, especially when it comes to childcare.

The study found that nearly three out of four companies where the working moms were employed did not offer childcare benefits. And about 39 percent had to miss work during the year because of childcare issues.

?"This survey makes it clear that much still needs to be done in the workplace to support them in motherhood,? Bugbee said.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta continued their African adventure Sunday night, but can the crew hold on to their newfound peace? Don't bet on it.

Back from the orphanage, everyone's talking about how much they have and how it felt to witness people so appreciative for towels and soap. For the first time the women seem to find something worthwhile to bond over. Plus 15. 

Well, all but Marlo. She's bitching about the shrimp in her salad. Minus 10. Apparently the trip to the orphanage affected some of the ladies more than others.

Has anyone else noticed that Cynthia's hair is gorgeous this entire trip? Plus 8. I think it's really stunning.

Phaedra invites the ladies to a museum to experience the local Xhosa culture. She says when you know better you do better. We'll agree with the sentiment. Plus 7.

Unfortunately, the sentiment and the reality are two different things. The Xhosa culture couldn't be more sexist. All a man has to do is find a lady he likes on the street, tell a family member to fetch her for his wife.

The woman involved has no choice in the matter. Minus 10. That's just scary.

Of course not everyone need worry. For instance, Sheree is too old. Yes, according to the herbalist/medicine man/witch doctor or whatever the hell he is, his reading of the "bones" tells him Sheree will never marry again because she is too old.

Plus 12 because we can't stop laughing.

OK, so his ancestor's bones are actually a strange combination of sea shells and dice that you blow on like you're about to shoot craps and then he can read your fate. 

So how accurate are these bones? Well, they say that Kandi's living with the guy she'll marry. A bit of a problem since she's single and the last man she lived with died. The bones man simply says that his spirit is following her and is always there.

Too bad Kandi can't marry a spirit then. Minus 10.

Marlo's fortune tells her she's never found a man who really loves her. No kidding. And NeNe's says she isn't happy and that her husband is a good man and he's right but she shouldn't stay if she's not happy. 

NeNe argues she's not happily married but she is happy. The bones disagree. Plus 8 because it's fun to watch NeNe argue with a stack of sea shells.

Oh, and the bones tell us that Cynthia is happily married. Ha! Minus 9. Maybe for public appearances, if that but not for real.

Back at the reserve Marlo decides to give the ladies a treat and show off her shoes and bags. She's packed 29 pairs of heels for an African safari. Minus 8. What would she have packed if she went to Paris for 10 days?

The night gets wild as the alcohol flows and Marlo and Kandi swap favorite sexual positions, demonstrations included. How do we even issue points for that? But at least every one is laughing instead of screaming at one another. If only it would last.

The next day Marlo's too sick to head out on safari, not that it matters. The women are so loud and into their gossiping that they miss most of the wildlife they pass by. Minus 7.

It seems like everyone is looking to cause trouble. First Kandi tells NeNe they've all been trashing Marlo. Why would she do that? Minus 10.

And what's with all of the bitching about Kim? The girl's not even here and personally we think having a two month old infant at home is a pretty good reason to skip a trip to another continent.

First Kandi and Cynthia gossip that they're not surprised Kim didn't come and they can't picture her at an orphanage with a bunch of African kids. Minus 10, especially for Kandi who always comes off like Kim's friend.

Then Sheree calls Kim and throws the girls under the bus by telling her that they said they can't picture her in Africa holding some black babies. Minus 15. This just keeps getting worse.

And it just won't stop. Kim's name pops up again during dinner as NeNe calls her the boss of the smalls. Now everybody's bitching and it looks like this fight is going to continue into next week if not beyond.

We'll see if anyone is still talking to one another by the time they get home.

Immigration Talk with a Mexican American: Why Did Republicans ...

The Republicans recently held their 2012 National Conference "CPAC" which is an annual political conference attended by conservative activists and elected officials from across the United States. In the past, keynote speakers included: Ronald Reagans, the Bushes, Karl Rove and Mitt Romney. These speakers "Spread the News" Republicans want their attendees to hear and pass along to back in their home states. Who did they invite to speak at the 2012 CPAC conference? Peter Brimelow, an infamous White Nationalist with restrictionist views that promotes Whites Only Immigration policies and opposes multi-culturalism. In a recent interview, Brimelow, an immigrant from Great Britain, said he?s opposed to not only illegal immigration, but legal immigration too. He said it is creating a ?Spanish speaking underclass parallel to the African American underclass.?

You'll often hear that the immigration debate suffers from a lack of political will. But what it really needs is honesty and clarity. And so, thank goodness for people like Peter Brimelow. His beliefs are vile, dangerous and antithetical to the greatest traditions of this country. But what is extremely helpful is that he's honest and clear about what he believes.

Brimelow is convinced that -- as he recently told a reporter for CBS News -- "diversity is weakening American identity."

He is not alone. A few years ago, commentator Patrick Buchanan published a book where he argued that the United States was better off when most of the immigrants to its shores came from Europe and not Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Question: What do immigrants from those parts of the world have in common? Answer: They're not white.

Brimelow shares his beliefs on the website he founded -- VDARE.com. The site is named in honor of Virginia Dare, the first child born to English settlers in America before all that dreadful race mixing and diluting of bloodlines occurred. He writes books like his best-seller "Alien Nation: Common Sense About America's Immigration Disaster." And he also gives speeches and appears on panels like the one in which he participated recently at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) titled: "The Failure of Multiculturalism: How the Pursuit of Diversity Is Weakening the American Identity."
Most Americans are not as honest or as clear as Brimelow. They waste a lot of time and effort trying to keep up appearances and pretending to be more progressive and open-minded about immigration than they really are. They'll deny until their last breath that they have anything against immigrants who come to the United States legally from countries like China, Pakistan, India or Brazil. Why, this is a country of immigrants, they'll say. It's only illegal immigration they have a problem with, they'll insist.

That's not true. The three dirty little secrets about the immigration debate are that how Americans feel about immigrants has a lot to do with what country people are coming from, that racism and xenophobia are part of the equation and always have been, and that legal immigrants are as much of a target as their illegal brethren.

Powerful groups such as the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) or the Center for Immigration Studies advocate for limits on legal immigration, and they influence Congress. My congressman, Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.), was once a lobbyist for FAIR. Little wonder that lawmakers occasionally call for a moratorium on legal immigration or that, in the 1996 welfare reform law, one group stripped of benefits was legal immigrants.

Still, Americans cling to the fantastical claim that they love and appreciate immigrants -- as long as those immigrants come legally. I blame the indoctrination that many of us went through in public schools. We were taught that the United States is a nation of immigrants, that we draw strength from our diversity, that we should cherish our cultural differences, and that people from all over the world come here for second chances and wind up building a first-rate nation.

As someone who grew up in Great Britain and came to the United States in the mid-1970s, Brimelow missed those lessons. An immigrant who is critical of immigration, he is described as a "white nationalist" by the Southern Poverty Law Center. According to the SPLC, the website that Brimelow founded and edits is a hate site.

I would imagine that the people who invite someone like Brimelow to address their group know exactly what to expect, and his remarks to CPAC did not disappoint.

According to CBS News' "Political Hotsheet," Brimelow said during the panel that immigration -- both legal and illegal -- was, along with multiculturalism, damaging America by creating a "Spanish-speaking underclass parallel to the African-American underclass." He described Hispanic immigrants as "completely dysfunctional" and declared the state of California as "rapidly turning into a Hispanic slum" that is "totally overrun by barrios of illegal immigrants."

Anyone else feel like they need a shower? Let me honest and clear. My Mexican-American family has been in the United States for five generations. By comparison, Peter Brimelow has been here for five minutes. No wonder he doesn't understand the first thing about America and the values that make it great.

Pennsylvania: Muslim leaders threaten Muslim business owners ...

Whatever the cogency of their moral critique of alcohol and tobacco, these Muslim leaders are pushing for a solution that is characteristically Islamic: instead of working to teach Muslim youth self-control and the virtues of avoiding drinking, smoking and drug use, they want to make it impossible for them to fall into these vices by making them unavailable. This is the same mentality that, instead of teaching men to respect women and control themselves, forces women to cover themselves up in public, ostensibly so as to remove all temptation.

And above all this is a Sharia move. If it weren't, they wouldn't be pressuring the store owners to stop selling pork as well. Their attempt to portray this as a strike for morality and the common welfare falls flat when they bring the pork ban into it. Here again, Muslims are trying to force non-Muslims -- in this case, those who live near and patronize these stores -- to abide by Sharia provisions, instead of simply refraining themselves from the things to which they object.

CHESTER ? A group of Islamic leaders is urging Muslim business owners to stop selling alcohol, tobacco and drug paraphernalia, which are prohibited in the Quran because they contribute to the destruction of humanity.

The United Muslim Coalition for Chester Citizens Against Violence and Crime mailed out a letter detailing the request to 16 Muslim-owned businesses last month.

The coalition wants the businesses to stop selling such products because they run counter to Islam and also contribute to the drug and violence problem plaguing Chester. The coalition claims the business owners are ignoring passages in the Quran that call for Muslims to protect others from harm.

?They?re preying on the addictions that plague our community,? Imam Haneef Mahdi said. ?We?re trying to eradicate from the root those things that are hurting our community.?

Imam Farid W. Rasool said many people buy blunts from these stores strictly to lace the wraps with marijuana, cocaine or embalming fluid. The latter is known as ?wet? on the streets.

Rasool said many of Chester?s youth engaged in drugs and violence identify with the Muslim faith. Coalition leaders said they are tired of seeing these youth ? and others who don?t identify with Islam ? dying on the streets.

?We have a right to request that you stop contributing to the death of your community,? Keith Muhammad said. ?We are asking as a community for you to stop. That should be respected. Certainly, out of the law of Islam, you should be moved.?

Coalition leaders said they are just one cog in a broader effort to improve Chester. They said they simply are asking their fellow Muslims to adhere to their faith and stop taking actions detrimental to the community.

If the business owners do not cease selling forbidden products, the coalition said it will ask the public to stop supporting those businesses.

Coalition leaders do not view their efforts merely as another anti-violence group taking action.

They said they want to influence the morality of the community and are calling on Muslim business owners to cease living a contradictory lifestyle.

?We live by example,? Muhammad said. ?That is what we?re trying to get them to do.?

In their letter, the coalition also asked Muslim business owners to cease selling pork and any other products also forbidden in the Quran.

The Muslim leaders spent two weeks visiting each of the establishments, because none of them responded to their letter or attended their meeting, they said.

Mahdi said many of the business owners expressed concerns about profits. Some store operators are immigrants more focused on prospering in America than following their religion, he said.

?The concern was normally the monetary loss that would be taken if they removed these products from their stores,? Mahdi said. ?There are certainly other things they could be selling that would make their businesses profitable.?

Coalition leaders noted at least 25 Muslim-owned businesses are making profits by selling wholesome products. There is no need to sell forbidden products, they said.

?We are enjoined to have love in our hearts to every human being,? Nusrat J. Rashid said. ?Why on earth would you want another human being to be subject to these dangers??

Motorola unveiled the schedule (or lack thereof) in its Owners' Forum under Motorola Android Software Upgrade News.

For phone models,?Motorola's Ice Cream Sandwich rollout begins in "Q3," that is, sometime between June and September of this year. For now, that only includes the Atrix and Photon. When it comes to tablets, only the U.S.-based, Wi-Fi Xoom has received the new software; the other three versions of Xoom will have to wait until April to see ICS, while the Xyboard and Xoom 2 get it in the summer.

When the big moment does arrive, Motorola customers can follow these instructions:

In most cases, consumers will receive a notification on their device that the OTA upgrade is available. An available upgrade or update may be rolled out over a period of time in order to best manage the deployment volume and experience. At times, a small testing group is provided the upgrade before it's made available to a larger group. On your Motorola Android Phone or Tablet, you can go to?Settings ? About Phone/Tablet ? System Updates?to manually check for an OTA upgrade. All estimated release dates are based on available information and are subject to change.

It's been a couple weeks now since we brought you a leaked build of Android 4.0.4 for the Sprint Nexus S 4G. According to an internal screen shot sent to Android Police, we might finally see a release on Feb. 16 -- as in tomorrow, for those of us here in the States.
