Lenny Kravitz Explains 'Subdued' Cinna In 'Hunger Games'
'All his expression comes out in his creations,' musician-turned-actor tells MTV News.

For those of us who've been following each and every production detail of "The Hunger Games," the casting process was perhaps the most intriguing element to dissect and overanalyze.
One of the most interesting casting announcements was Lenny Kravitz landing the role of sensitive, sympathetic stylist Cinna. When MTV News caught up with Kravitz recently, we asked the Grammy-winning musician-turned-actor to tell us how he ended up with the role.
"How hard [did I go] after it? I was on the other end of the phone, that's about it," he said. "I wish I had a great, struggling story, but I was working on my album when Gary Ross called and said, 'I'd like you to do this movie, "The Hunger Games," ' and so the first thing I had to ask was, 'What is "Hunger Games"?' because I honestly did not know. He told me and I downloaded the book that night, read it, called him back promptly the next day and said, 'Thank you very much, I'll be there.' "
Kravitz said Ross was inspired to contact him after seeing his performance in "Precious."
"He liked the performance in 'Precious' and thought that Nurse John and Cinna shared some similar qualities as far as being nurturing characters, and that sold him," Kravitz said. "So I was very fortunate."
What sold Kravitz on accepting the role was what also made a lot of us obsessive fans of "The Games": author Suzanne Collins' captivating story and relatable, respectable characters.
"Here I am, I'm recording all day in the studio, I'm tired, it's probably 2 in the morning, I'm finished. I pick up the computer, and already your eyes are tired, and I'm starting to read this thing. And I was so tired, and I didn't want to keep reading, I wanted to put it down, but I couldn't," he recalled. "It really kept my attention, the story kept building. That sold me right there: the storytelling. It really all comes down to that."
Although readers of the book came to know a more flamboyant version of the character as created by Collins, Kravitz and Ross decided to tone him down just a bit.
"One of my first questions to Gary Ross was, 'How far do you want to go with this?' and at the end of our conversation, we both agreed that it would be more interesting to make him more subdued, to play him more like [fashion icons] Yves Saint Laurent or Tom Ford, more classic," he said. "[Cinna] wears his waistcoats and his flats, and all his expression comes out in his creations. He's got his little bit of gold eye shadow, but yeah, he's pretty subdued."

Fed's Bernanke going back to college for a day
WASHINGTON?? Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will take a break from his day job Tuesday afternoon to revisit the academic life he led before coming to Washington a decade ago.
He'll stand before a class of George Washington University undergraduates and give the first of four one-hour lectures on the Fed. Anyone can view it live (at www.ustream.tv/channel/federalreserve) at 12:45 p.m. Eastern time. The Fed will maintain the four lectures on its site for later viewing.
Tuesday's lecture focuses on U.S. central banking dating to the panics of the 19th century and early 20th century, which led to the Fed's creation in 1913. The second lecture, on Thursday, involves the central bank's actions after World War II.
In the final two, on March 27 and 29, Bernanke will review the roots of the 2008 financial crisis and the Fed's response to the crisis and the recession that followed.
GW assembled the class of 30 from 80 applicants who wrote essays on what they hoped to learn from arguably the second-most-powerful U.S. official after President Barack Obama.
For a Fed chief who has set new standards for public accessibility, the GW lecture series marks another first: None of Bernanke's predecessors ever helped teach college students while serving as chairman.
For Bernanke, the GW lectures also serve a dual function:
They give him a chance to reprise the role of professor he played for more than two decades, first at Stanford and then at Princeton, where he eventually chaired the economics department.
And they give him a way to expand his mission of demystifying the Fed. As part of that campaign, Bernanke became the first Fed chief to hold regular news conferences and conduct town-hall meetings.
In addressing the public directly, Bernanke has also sought to neutralize attacks on the Fed, some of them from Republican presidential candidates. Critics have argued that under his leadership, the Fed's efforts to boost economic growth have heightened the risk of high inflation.
Bernanke and his defenders counter that the Fed's extraordinary efforts to ease borrowing costs and raise confidence helped save the financial system and kept the Great Recession from deepening into another Great Depression.

74 per cent of females in the Northern Region cannot read - Survey ...
Tamale, March 15, GNA ? The Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) has revealed that 74.1 per cent of females in the Northern Region cannot read at all, with only 0.7 per cent able to read a whole sentence, while 1.4 per cent can partially read a sentence.
The Survey also revealed that generally, 65 per cent of females in the Region had no formal education at all and only 6.4 per cent had attained more than Senior High School education.
Zangbalun-Bomahe Naa Chief Alhassan Issahaku Amadu, the Regional Population Officer disclosed this at the regional celebration of the 2012 International Women's Day on Wednesday in Tamale.
Organized by the Department of Women (DOW) of the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs, with support from its development partners, the celebration was under the theme ?Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures, Reducing Rural Poverty?.
Naa Amadu said access to quality education could brighten the future of females in the rural areas and could lead to poverty reduction.
He said, it was critical for females to be empowered through mentorship and modeling to impact positively on their self-esteem, behavior and educational progress.
He stressed the need to create an open door system for leadership development of females and involve them in educational planning at all levels.
?Government need to increase the political will, transparency and accountability in planning and implementation of Girls educational policies?, he said.
Mr I.P.S. Zakari-Saa, Northern Regional Director of DOW said despite the many commitments signed by government at the international level including the Beijing Platform for Action and the Millennium Development Goals that had implications for women's well being, they continued to lag behind their male counterparts in various areas of endeavour.
?Even though there has being significant achievements by women and attitudinal shift in society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation, there are still issues concerning male dominance?, he said.
Mr Zakari-Saa said women were not significantly represented in equal numbers in business, agriculture, health, politics and many other areas.
Madam Bridget Parwar, Regional Officer of Women in Agricultural Development who delivered a paper titled ?Women in Agriculture; A Way of Reducing Rural Poverty", said the Northern Region had about 5000 hectares of land some of which women could use for farming to help reduce poverty.
She said government had initiated many agricultural projects including the block farm system, fertilizer subsidy, agriculture mechanization and also extended credit to farmers and appealed to women to take advantage of these initiatives to generate income to support their families.

Investing With A Purpose: Impact Investing | Down to Earth Finance
I have long been familiar with Socially Responsible Investing (SRI). ?I?ve had many clients over the years choose these mutual funds for their IRAs. ?You can find a complete list of almost every SRI fund at socialfunds.com. ?It?s a fantastic way to support your causes and beliefs with your investing dollars. ?However, my main two complaints about SRI has been that they don?t always provide the best returns and their fees tend to be higher than the Fidelity and Vanguard funds I usually eschew.
As you may know from my recent post, I?ve embarked on an amazing personal and professional journey with the Pipeline Fellowship. ?(To vist the?Pipeline website?click here) This group trains women to become angel investors through education, mentoring, and practice. ?Our goal is two-fold: Invest in a woman-owned business and Pick a business that is socially conscious. ?We recently had a workshop on Impact Investing ? or SRI for individual private companies. ?It was led by the talented and experienced Morgan Simon, co-Foudner of TONIIC (click here to visit TONIIC). ?TONIIC is the most active social investor network in the world. ?
From strictly a performance and fee perspective, I?m not a fan of SRI mutual funds. ?However, Morgan pointed out that a benefit of SRI fund is that while they may not be the top performer, the funds do have shareholder activism; for example getting McDonald?s not to use pesticides. It was a point I had not considered and will definitely take another look at SRI funds for that reason. ??

Executives of Minnesota Public Radio are accustomed to depositing checks. Their annual ?pledge weeks? seem to roll around as frequently as Red Cross blood drives and often sound just as desperate.

But MPR?s case was particularly weak. Here?s why:
In April 2009, MPR and the Met Council signed a 10-page memorandum of understanding in which the council agreed to install a floating track slab, or its equivalent, ?capable of continuously providing vibration mitigation satisfying the criteria? specified in the document.
The agreement said the council would not commit to ?a specific solution? at that time because final engineering was not yet underway.
On the recommendation of project engineers, the council ultimately opted for a rubber-supported floating slab that has been widely used by other rail projects to protect sensitive facilities from vibrations.
It is the same type of slab being used to protect University of Minnesota research laboratories located near the LRT alignment on Washington Avenue. Cost estimates at the time showed that a rubber-supported slab would be about 30 percent less expensive than a steel spring-supported slab, which MPR sought.
So in February 2010, MPR went to court, essentially trying to rewrite the memorandum of understanding it signed to require a steel spring-supported slab.
In the months that followed, MPR?s lawyers undertook extensive discovery efforts, compelling the Met Council to copy and provide 58,000 pages of documents. The council also was forced to hire several consultants to ?independently analyze the rubber-supported floating slab and rebut the errors of analysis by MPR?s experts,? according to court documents.
Suit dismissed
But none of this changed the plain language of the agreement that MPR and the council had signed, as Judge Ostby ultimately concluded.
Last November, Ostby granted the council?s motion for a summary judgment dismissing MPR?s lawsuit, saying ?there is no evidence that the Met Council has breached the mitigation agreement.? In her ruling, Ostby also ordered MPR to reimburse the council for ?reasonable costs? incurred in connection with the lawsuit.
The council initially submitted an itemized claim for $136,882 in costs, primarily for the independent experts and document copying. But MPR objected to that amount, and the council ultimately settled for $55,000.
However, the taxpayers will have to pick up the entire tab for the Met Council legal bills from Lockridge, Grindal and Nauen ? a hefty $775,914.
MPR?s legal expenses presumably were in the same neighborhood. It was represented by Leonard, Street and Deinard, a prominent Minneapolis firm. MPR declined last week to reveal how much it spent on lawyers and consultants.

In a sharp reminder of the deep unpopularity of the austerity measures he has overseen, a pensioner on crutches hurled yoghurt at the burly Venizelos just before his speech, forcing him to delay his appearance to change clothes.
Venizelos, the dominant figure in the party since his appointment to the finance portfolio by former Prime Minister George Papandreou last year, is expected to win PASOK's leadership comfortably in an internal vote on March 18.
However opinion polls show the Socialists far behind the conservative New Democracy party ahead of elections expected by mid-May at the latest.
Both PASOK and New Democracy are in the coalition government headed by former central banker Lucas Papademos but have been openly jockeying for position in the runup to the elections, which may not produce a clear winner.
Formed in November, Papademos' emergency coalition government had a narrow mandate to complete bailout and debt cut talks and then hold elections as soon as possible.
A government official said Greeks may go to the polls as early as the end of April once the final details of the bond restructuring are in place.
The so-called Private Sector Involvement (PSI) is a key component of the 130 billion-euro ($170.55 billion) rescue package agreed last month with the European Union and International Monetary Fund and is expected to be approved following Thursday's bond swap.
Once the debt swap operation is finally completed on April 12, when a smaller tranche of bonds worth at least 20 billion euros will be exchanged, Greece can go ahead with new elections, an official said.
"I imagine it (the elections) will be somewhere then," government spokesman Pantelis Kapsis told Skai television when asked if the polls would take place on April 29 or on one of the following Sundays.
OBLIGATIONS
Whoever wins the poll, Greece will have to stick to the reforms it has promised, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble warned.
"Greece must stick to its obligations after the election. That's the basis for the (bailout) program," he said in an interview with Greek newspaper To Vima.
Austerity measures associated with the policies have plunged the Greek economy into its longest and deepest slump since World War Two and there is no clear sign of a return to the kind of growth that could help cut its crippling debt pile.
Underlining the dire state of an economy in which unemployment is running at 21 percent with one in two young people out of work, data on Friday showed gross domestic product shrank by a record 7 percent in 2011. Investment slumped by 21 percent after a 15 percent slide in 2010.
Central bank governor George Provopoulos said this week's bond restructuring would allow Greece to begin the long journey towards regaining the trust of investors.

As the government struggles to stabilize the economy, a senior official said there were hopes of getting 1 billion euros in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) this year as a stimulus to encourage investment.

* The LRA emerged in the late 1980s in northern Uganda as a successor to the Holy Spirit Movement, a rebel group led by Kony's aunt Alice Lakwena, that was defeated by Ugandan forces.
* When Kony launched his war against the government of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, he said he wanted to fight for the rights of the Acholi, a marginalized northern tribe.
* When his people did not back his campaign, Kony fled to south Sudan with a plan to obliterate the "treacherous" Acholi.
* Kony, who served as an altar boy in his village, claims to talk to angels and has said he wanted to rule Uganda according to the biblical Ten Commandments.
* The LRA became notorious for abducting children for use as soldiers, sex slaves and porters. An LRA hallmark is slicing off lips and ears of "collaborators" to punish and mark them out.
* In a rare interview with a bodyguard published by a Sudanese magazine, Kony described himself as a lord and a liberator, even though he came from a typically impoverished rural family in Odek in Uganda's north.
* "Dreams of the spirit came to me one night and asked me to launch a Lord's resistance movement," Kony said. "I spent 60 days praying and appealing to God to strengthen my faith so I could liberate the people of Uganda from corruption, sins and immoral thinking."
* Many of Kony's thousands of abductees were forced to kill children who tried to escape, or murder their own relatives, fostering a sense of complicity that guarantees subservience.
* Under Kony's instruction, child soldiers and their commanders - many barely in their teens - carried out the most violent attacks on unarmed villagers.
* More than 300 civilians were shot, hacked and burned to death in February 2004 in one LRA raid on a camp for some of more than 1.6 million people uprooted by the war.
* Preaching a mix of Christian beliefs and traditional African religion, he initially attracted a wide following. But he failed to win lasting support, and under pressure from the Ugandan army and local resistance he was forced from Uganda.
* The rebel chief, who has worn his hair in dreadlocks or braids and sometimes dressed in women's clothes, according to former fighters, is a powerful speaker who instills fear.
* Several attempts to capture Kony by U.N. and Ugandan forces over the past few years have failed.
* President Barack Obama sent 100 U.S. military advisers to central Africa last year to help Ugandan forces in the hunt for Kony.
* Kony and his rump force are somewhere in central Africa, most likely in Democratic Republic of Congo, or perhaps the Central African Republic.
* There have been no reported LRA attacks in the Central African Republic or South Sudan since January 18, but there have been at least 12 raids in northeastern Congo in the first two weeks of February in areas where LRA groups have attacked during the last three years.
