Commentator Tony Greig diagnosed with lung cancer ? Cricket News Update

Former England captain and famed television commentator Tony Greig has been diagnosed with lung cancer, although the stage to which the disease has progressed, and the course of treatment, is yet to be confirmed.

The 66-year-old is scheduled to undergo a biopsy later this week, which will reveal the finer details regarding his disease. Meanwhile, the former England batsman maintained an optimistic attitude, claiming he intends to fight the illness with the help of his family.

?I have had a few scrapes in my life and this is another one,? Greig said while speaking to the Sunday Telegraph. ?[His wife] Vivian and I are going to put the boxing gloves on and fight this like we've never fought anything before.?

When asked about whether he would be taking up commentating duties with Channel Nine over the Australian summer, Greig did not commit himself, claiming the summer remained uncertain, while his family took precedence.

?At this stage, the summer is totally up in the air. My priority, 100%, is my family. They will come first,? said Greig.

Ian Healy, former Australian wicketkeeper and Grieg?s commentary colleague at Channel Nine, backed the former batsman to overcome the disease, claiming his resilience, and the support from family and friends, would enable him to pull through.

?... one thing he is though is tough so Greigy is at better chances than anyone to get through it,? said Healy. ?He has got a lovely family so he will have great support and certainly no shortage of it from us.?

Early signs of the disease can be traced to May this year, when Greig was diagnosed with bronchitis. The disease persisted with little to no improvement, and the former right-hander underwent a series of tests after the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka this month, which revealed a small lesion on his right lung.

About a fortnight ago, following his return to Australia, he had a large amount of fluid drained from the lung, and further tests revealed that he had lung cancer. The diagnosis makes Greig one among a host of cricketing personalities who have recently been diagnosed with cancer, among them former New Zealand batsman Martin Crowe, and Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.
