Google's Gundotra Promises 'Insanely Great' Nexus Cameras

Google's engineering chief has promised that the search giant is committed to producing phones with "insanely great cameras."

Vic Gundotra, senior vice president of engineering for Google, made the comment on a Google+ post he penned that questioned whether he should bring a bulky DSLR on an upcoming vacation to Lake Tahoe.

"Tonight, the DSLR won out. I care about shallow depth of field and want to capture photos like the one I've included in this post. I need my Canon 5d with me," he wrote. "So I've decided to dump all the lenses and carry only one. The 50mm 1.2. Let's see how this goes."

In the comments section, someone remarked that "improved sensors in phones will eventually convince you to" skip the DSLR.

Another reader remarked that he hopes to someday "just carry our future Nexus and we won't worry about any heavy camera," before asking Gundotra if that would ever be a possibility.

"We are committed to making Nexus phones insanely great cameras," Gundotra responded. "Just you wait and see."

It should come as no surprise that Google is working to improve the camera on its Nexus phones; it's probably working to improve all the features on its devices. But a powerful camera would be a nice selling point. In his review of the Nexus 4, PCMag's Jamie Lendino found the smartphone's camera to be mediocre.

"In my tests, photo quality was good, though not quite iPhone 5-quality ; outdoor shots looked balanced, but not particularly crisp or detailed," Lendino wrote. "Indoor shots were fairly noise-free, but a little soft in focus."

Video capture, however, was disappointing, he said. "Overall, the camera is an improvement over the Galaxy Nexus , but not enough of one," Lendino concluded.

Gundotra didn't go into any more detail; it was a response to a Google+ post rather than an official product announcement, after all. But we'll likely see something new from Google on the Nexus front at its annual I/O developer conference in May.
